Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Reporting to the Director, the Tutoring Specialist observes, assesses and evaluates tutors and Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders through the regular observation of tutoring sessions in classroom settings, the Tutoring Center and various campus tutoring locations. The Tutoring Specialist collaborates with the Director to ensure the effective operation of the Tutoring Center. The specialist makes recommendations to the Director for tutor and SI leader performance evaluations. he incumbent markets the tutoring center through presentations at new student orientations, on campus classroom visits, web communications and social media opportunities. The Specialist compiles tutoring and SI assessment data and edits final Tutoring Center reports. The position is also responsible for the daily operations of the Director’s office and the Center’s administrative needs. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 70% - Tutors and Supplemental Instruction Leaders Assistance Works with the Director to determine the content of the SI Leader and tutor training Co-leads SI Leader and tutor orientation training Observes, provides feedback, and makes recommendations to Director concerning SI Leaders’ performance and identifies any session problems. Session problems may include, but are not limited to, problem students, safety issues, and discipline Organizes and compiles data from every SI session in preparation for Director review, including items such as, attendance, test grades, and end of semester summary sheets Supervises Tutoring Center student workers in the absence of the Director 30%% - Operations Administration Serves as second in command in the absence of the director Provides assistance to students, faculty, and staff experiencing problems in accessing tutoring services Proofreads and edits a wide variety of assessment and tutoring center performance reports Assists the Director with a wide variety of marketing tasks including, but not limited to, informational presentations at new student and transfer orientation Updates the website and social media sites on regular basis Assists in maintaining the Tutoring Center web-based scheduling system Processes personnel, purchasing, and financial forms in a timely manner; develops and monitors a monthly calendar of deadlines to ensure compliance with all NSHE and campus policies and guidelines Designs and conducts SI weekly staff meetings to include strategies for program improvement that lead to student success Assists the Director in managing the program budget Position Description – Specialist, Tutoring Page 3 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom The Specialist is supervised by and works closely with the Director of the Tutoring Center. The individual is expected to take initiative and provide recommendations/improvements in processes for training tutors and SI Leaders. The Specialist handles day-to-day duties within the framework of prescribed policies and procedures. Judgment is used in the evaluation and assessment of tutors and SI Leaders and when it extends beyond established precedent, the Director’s input is sought. Impact The position helps to develop tutors’ and SI Leaders’ skills each semester. Regular observation and quality feedback is essential to ensuring student success—learning, persistence, and degree completion in a timely manner. Failure to observe and provide feedback will result in underachievement by tutors and SI Leaders and the students being tutored. 4.
