1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Specialist, Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and Exchange Program, is
responsible for managing the data on international students and scholars and creating systems to
maintain consistency between the various information systems, i.e., PeopleSoft, ISSM, and SEVIS.
The incumbent maintains computerized and physical files, generates reports, daily reviews and
responds to reportable events, and creates student and scholar records and visa documents. SEVIS
gathered information must be monitored closely as a part of a federal mandate requiring much more
oversight of international students and scholars and timely reporting on a wide range of issues. Duties
also include coordination of exchange and sponsored student programs by corresponding with
university and government representatives responsible for the programs involved. The position
updates materials regarding promotion, admission and enrollment and provides support and
programming to both in-bound and out-bound students. The Specialist reports to the Director, Office
of International Students and Scholars (OISS).

50% - Data Management
 Manage data on international students and scholars ensuring that the information systems are
consistent (PeopleSoft, ISSM, and SEVIS)
 Create records and visa documents
 Update and verify changes in records
 Ensure that reportable events are submitted in a timely manner
 Review and respond to reportable events
 Audit addresses, e-mails, and other various reportable data
20% - Exchange and Sponsored Student Coordination
 Provide assistance with outreach and programming for students participating on exchange and
sponsored programs
 Update materials provided
 Identify new opportunities government sponsored programs for the university to be a
participant
 Ensure exchange and sponsored students are properly admitted and registered through
coordination of responsible staff
10% - Report Generation
 Generate SEVIS reports, IIE reports, international student and scholar demographic
information, and other requested data
10% - International Student/Scholar Advising
 Assist international students and/or scholars with basic visa questions (F and J visa
categories)
10% - OISS Operations
 Assist with OISS functions such as programming, phone coverage, greeting clients, special
projects, staff meetings, retreats, etc.

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without

the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
It is extremely important that the incumbent is diligent and that the information transmitted is accurate.
The Specialist is a designated school official within the SEVIS system along with other OISS
professional staff. The individual works closely with the Director of OISS on decisions associated with
the position, but must work independently, with initiative, and with some latitude in decision-making.
Impact:
Reporting mistakes could result in federal violations and the arrest and/or deportation of international
students and scholars. This position is critical to the OISS mission of tracking and monitoring the
University of Nevada, Reno’s international students and scholars. Decisions made by the Specialist
impact the level of success that the University has with the data collection and accuracy of information
reported.
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written

Knowledge of:
 Federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to F and J visa categories for students and
scholars
 State and Federal laws and regulations concerning Federal Educational Rights and Privacy
Act (FERPA)
 Government sponsored programs including: SACM, AMIDEAST, Fulbright, BSMP, IREX and
World Learning
 Institutional Exchange programs and processes
Skills:
 Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not
limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email) specifically with
linking of student information systems and international databases such as ISSM and/or
SEVIS and generation of reports.
 Attention to detail and accuracy
 Excellent verbal and written communication
 Web design preferred, but not required.
