1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
Under the general supervision of the Director of Counseling Services, the Psychologist is an
administrative faculty member in the Department of Counseling Services who provides a full range of
psychological counseling, crisis intervention, and assessment services to university students. The
individual in this position also provides clinical supervision and evaluation to graduate students and
post-doctoral residents in training, along with administrative and other duties as assigned by the
Director. The position has a “generalist” treatment focus and emphasis, as well as prevention and
awareness outreach and consultation for the university community. The majority of this work is
accomplished via a one-to-one interpersonal relationship with students, but may sometimes extend to
faculty and other professional members of the community. All services provided are based on
professional ethics, established standards for providers of mental health services, and state and
federal law.

70% - Direct Clinical Service
 Conduct clinical assessment/intake evaluations; provide individual and group counseling
 Provide crisis intervention and critical incident responses
 Facilitate on and off-campus referrals and provide mental health consultations related to
student issues and concerns
 Provide direct clinical supervision of one or more psychology graduate student trainees and/or
post-doctoral residents, and participate in facilitating training program
 Facilitate professional development training in varied assessment and treatment competencies
for clinical staff and trainees.
 Maintain records in compliance with professional, legal and ethical standards
 May serve as subject matter expert within the department for a particular program or
diagnosis, i.e., eating disorders, intercultural issues, substance abuse, etc.
30% - Consultation and Outreach
 Consult/collaborate with on and off-campus clinical professionals, faculty, students, and staff,
particularly regarding student issues and concerns
 Design and implement programs and outreach activities focused on a wide variety of student
concerns and issues
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
Because of professional ethics, established standards for providers of mental health, and state and
federal laws, any clinical aspects of the position must function independently without constraints.
Impact:
Decisions and judgments made by the position impact the department, division, and university
administratively, clinically, and educationally (training). Administratively, such decisions and
judgments will contribute to the department’s effective and ethical functioning. Clinically, such

decisions will directly affect the health and welfare of the students served. And, with respect to
training, they will help to shape the future of the profession. Sound professional judgments in the
position will contribute to the University’s goals of increased enrollment, retention and persistence of
students, and lifelong learning. Sound professional judgments in this position will also result in
identification and communication regarding risks to the health and safety of the entire University
community, along with positive, respectful leadership with regard to diversity in employee
perspectives. Decisions and judgments in the position will reduce the potential for danger to student
clients or members of the university community or a malpractice suit against the employee and/or
university. The person in this position will have the opportunity to reduce interference with a student’s
retention and persistence and support the university’s goals for its students graduating, achieving
career/life goals and contributing to responsible membership in society.

Knowledge of:
 Mastery of a body of professional knowledge in the field of psychology and college student
development
 Psychopathology and psychotherapy, case management, crisis intervention, group therapy,
and program implementation and evaluation
 State and federal laws concerning the delivery of psychological services
 Professional ethics and standards for providers as stated by applicable professional
organizations, as well as state and federal law.
 Ethical use of technology and awareness of the limitations of technology in providing
counseling services
 APA multicultural guidelines that govern psychological practice
Skills:
 Sound administrative, organizational, managerial, program development and dataanalytical/evaluation skills
 Clinical supervision for psychologists
 Good empathic, interpersonal communication skills, particularly for diverse community
members within and outside of the university
 Excellent oral and written communication skills
 Time management and task management skills
 Understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Ability to:
 Carry out complex administrative and managerial tasks to include decision making, planning,
problem solving, negotiation, resource allocation and reallocation, and change management
 Work with flexibility under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and
independent judgment
 Identify the effect of culture on practice and to implement strategies to compare the worldviews
of clients from cultures different from that of the practitioner
 Discuss the usefulness of developmental models and theories, such as ethnic racial identity
and multicultural sensitivity on psychological practice
 Manage, prioritize, and complete multiple projects/tasks in an efficient and timely manner while
maintaining focus on organizational goals
 Exercise sound judgment to make objective, fair and consistent decisions

Doctorate Degree from a regionally accredited institution in clinical or counseling
psychology to include a doctoral internship in which he/she received supervision for
counseling and psychotherapy activities

Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
Doctorate Degree and three years of counseling/clinical experience to include one year
in a university counseling setting and graduate coursework or other training in clinical
supervision

Licensure as a Psychologist in the State of Nevada with requirement of obtaining the
license within two years of starting date in the position
If the incumbent does not hold a Nevada psychologist License at time of appointment,
the incumbent will be shown as a “Psychotherapist”, Range 4 until he/she is licensed in
the state of Nevada. Licensing must take place within two years of the date of
appointment. Failure to earn a Nevada Psychologist License within two years will result
in termination of the appointment.
