Description: Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of
force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Light work requires
walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling.

The Interior Design series positions are responsible for development, coordination, and
management of assigned small to large architectural projects and contracts to be completed in
accordance with University and construction standards. The positions vary in area of expertise,
size, cost, and complexity of projects assigned. The positions report to the Director of
Construction Services.
Range 2 – Project Coordinator:
The Project Coordinator is responsible for assisting in the review or design of all campus interior
furnishing plans and design and selections for new construction, renovations, and remodel
projects, updating and maintaining the campus design and construction standards tied to interior
finishes and furnishings.
Range 3 – Project Manager (in addition to above R2):
The Project Manager is responsible for reviewing or designing of all campus interior furnishings
plans and design and selections for new construction, renovations, and remodel projects,
updating and maintaining the campus design and construction standards tied to interior finishes
and furnishings. Projects must meet campus standards and the campus master plan; planning
reviews; managing the contract for the Design Consultant Team and contract for the Contractor;
designing and directing small campus projects; and providing input to update and maintain the
campus design and construction standards.
Range 4 – Senior Project Manager (in addition to above R3):
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the development, coordination and management of
interior design projects for the University. The position is responsible for project management to
include creating architectural plans; developing and maintaining cost estimates; providing detailed
plan checking and review; and providing necessary bid documents and construction administration.
When outside services are utilized the Senior Project Manager initiates and prepares professional
service contracts to private architectural, engineering firms and contractors to design and construct
projects and capital improvements per University requirements. The incumbent is a resource for
resolving problems and/or providing clarification to contract documents and building requirements.

Range 2 - Project Coordinator
70% - Project Coordination
 Manage small projects involving departments, outside architectural firms and vendors
 Conduct project meetings with departments, contractors, vendors, and outside design
firms
 Insure that nonconformance with plans and quality of work situations are addressed with
the Project Manager and subsequently with contractors and appropriate remedies are
implemented
 Assist in the preparation administration of contracts for consultants, contractors and
outside vendors
 Assist in the management of out-sourced architectural consultants
 Assist in bid preparation information, evaluate and award contracts
 Conduct inspections and close-out completed projects
 Review and process change orders, requests for information, and general construction
correspondence to insure project schedule is met
 Assist in providing project close out documentation
30% - Interior Design
 Assist in providing interior design consulting services for all the construction and
renovation projects the Facilities Services Project Managers and Construction
Coordinators manage
 Assist in researching and supporting departmental planning presentations
 Provide interior design drawings and color board presentations used in the selection of
interior finish materials and furnishings
 Assist in the review and recommendations to the Facilities Maintenance staff on all
flooring replacement projects
 Assist in preparation of construction documents
 Assist in the establishment and/or development of campus interior design parameters
 Create classroom designs

 Manage multiple projects involving departments, outside architectural firms and vendors

 Meet with departments, deans, and chairs to assist with project cost estimates, plans,
specifications and other information regarding architectural/interior design, bidding, and
construction management
 Meet with departments, deans, and chairs to assist with project cost estimates, plans,
specifications and other information regarding space utilization, interior furnishings and
finishes design, bidding, and installation
 Provide interior design consulting services for all the construction and renovation projects
the Facilities Services Project Managers and Construction Coordinators manage
 Provide research and support for departmental planning presentations
 Work with the Senior Director of Planning and Construction Services and the Director of
Planning and Design to provide recommendations regarding yearly upgrades to campus
classroom furnishings and equipment; coordinate and manage seating replacement
projects and furnishing and equipment upgrade projects
 Provide review and recommendations to the Facilities Maintenance staff on all flooring
replacement projects
 Assist in preparation of contract management for flooring replacing projects
 Establish/develop campus interior design parameters
 Create administrative space design parameters
 Collect and organize the university’s furnishings and finish needs into clear planning
goals and objectives
 Revise and maintain the web-based University of Nevada Reno Design and Construction
Standards regarding all furnishings and finish specifications and update yearly
 Incorporate applicable planning standards
Range 4 - Senior Project Manager (in addition to above R3):
70% - Project Management
 Manage multiple large scale projects over $1 million dollars involving outside interior
design firms, general contractors, vendors and state agencies
 Conduct daily site visits to the project to review progress and ensure compliance with
design documents
 Coordinate outside private architectural and engineering firms who provide design for
major construction projects
 Plan and track capital improvement programs and deferred maintenance programs, as
well as other construction and maintenance improvement planning programs
 Interpret and enforce building codes and ordinances
 Act as liaison between State Public Works Division, State inspectors, campus inspectors
and construction teams to administer the daily field report
30% - Interior Design
 Provide detailed design and analysis for campus renovations and capital improvement
projects requiring plans and specifications
 Create complex interior design plans and specifications for institutional facilities including
knowledge of life safety codes and zoning requirements

Develop cost estimates for assigned projects
Meet with campus departments to review scope and provide project cost estimates
Meet with departments, deans, and chairs to review scope of work, assist with project
cost estimates, plans, specifications and other information regarding architectural
design, bidding, and construction management, and ensure scope complies with
campus standards

3. Describe the types of decisions the position(s) makes independently as part of the core

The Project Coordinator, under the direction of the Project Manager or higher management,
makes recommendations to the Project Managers on interior design projects (small to medium
in size) that involve public buildings and the University’s master plan. The Project Manager
must make independent decisions in relation to work priorities, standards, function, design,
techniques, and guidelines in order to carry out daily work. When standards and techniques are
not applicable, judgment and ingenuity must be utilized. The individual is responsible for
directing and relaying information to departments, agencies, contractors and design specialists
and is accountable for all aspects of project guidelines requiring the application of a wide range
of design and architectural principles. The Senior Project Manager acts as the University’s
Representative/Owner for all phases of internal design projects and requires the ability to act
independently and make critical decisions. The Senior Project Manager is given highest level
authority in above duties and has the ability to make independent decisions when completing
project assignments.

The Project Coordinator has limited accountability for some aspects of project guidelines
requiring the application of a wide range of design and architectural principles. When standards
and techniques are not applicable, the Coordinator seeks clarification from the Project
Managers. The Project Manager and Senior Project Manager act independently and make
critical decisions with minimal input from senior level administration. When difficulties are
encountered in resolving a significant construction issue, the Director of Construction
Management, Senior Director of Planning and Construction, and/or the Associate Vice
President, Facilities Services are consulted. Senior level administration are routinely advised of
ongoing projects. The position consults with supervisor on long-range projects and department
goals.
