1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Physician, Student Health, performs the duties of a clinical physician at the Student Health
Center (SHC) located in Reno in the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM). The
position’s responsibilities include clinical care of patients, collaboration with Physician’s Assistants
and/or Nurse Practitioners, and participation in designated campus activities such as student
orientation. Position participates in teaching and evaluating medical students during clinical rotations
and performs administrative/ program management duties as assigned. The position reports to the
Director of Student Health Services.

85% - Evaluation and Treatment of Patients
 Perform duties typically associated with a physician in an outpatient setting to include patient
examination and evaluation, diagnosing and treating illnesses, ordering and interpreting tests
and other related duties
5% - Administrative Program Management
 Participate in one or more administrative programs identified as important and necessary to
the department which include but are not limited to: Quality Assurance Committee, Student
Health Advisory Committee, Insurance Advisory Committee, Continuing Medical Education
Committee, Chart Review Committee
 Participate in campus activities such as orientation, educational programming for students or
other health related events
5% - Midlevel Practitioners Supervision
 Using recognized family medical protocols and guidelines, perform duties of collaborating
physicians with department physician extenders
 Assist in evaluating midlevel practitioners
5% - Teaching and Evaluating Medical Students
 Teach and evaluate UNSOM medical students in the clinical rotation setting according to
UNSOM guidelines
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without

the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Student Health Center is a clinical practice that provides health care to university students as well
as faculty and staff. Administrative duties assigned to these positions have been identified as very
important to the Department’s provision of care and general operation. The Student Health Center
also serves an important role in providing safety and health information to the campus as a whole.

Impact:
Decisions and judgments made by the clinician directly impacts the quality of health care provided to
our patients. Failure to perform as expected could result in sub-standard patient care. Failure to
perform as expected could result in loss of accreditation, or failure to meet the standard of providing
high quality health care. Failure to perform as expected could result in poor communication or
transmission of important or crucial health related information.
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 Clinical skills and knowledge based normally obtained through completion of an Liaison
Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school and an Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency in family medicine or
similar discipline or a program with similar level and intensity of training
 State and federal laws, with particular emphasis on physician-patient relationships and
regulations related to the practice of medicine
 The medical education process, including clinical medicine
 Federal laws and regulations – Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
and Chapter 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part II
Skills:
 Skills that encompass general care for all ages, both sexes, each organ system, and every
disease entity
 Resident and medical student teaching and supervision

Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopath (DO) from a regionally accredited
institution and completion of residency in family medicine or related discipline

care delivery environment
