1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Manager, Publications and Graphic Design for Development and Alumni Relations (DAR),
advances division priorities through print and electronic products, which includes direction for creative
concepts and developing graphics and materials that fulfill the overall fund-raising and friend-raising
goals of the division. The position is results-oriented and is responsible for the print and online
versions of the University of Nevada Reno’s alumni magazine Nevada Silver & Blue, development
publications, and campaign, capital project and event materials. The position reports to the Director of
Donor Relations and works closely with the VP DAR to assist in project decision-making and provide
leadership to writers, creative designers and photographers, on-campus contributors and paid
freelancers.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

50% - Project Management and Creative Direction
 Conduct needs assessment, develop project plan and timeline, develop creative concepts
 Determine priorities, present concepts and designs, contract services, make assignments
 Ensure timely completion of project milestones and deliverables
 Provide art direction for photo shoots, including managing photographers, assistants, talent,
location, production, logistics and budget
 Resolve issues, find solutions
 Ensure accuracy and quality of completed projects
 Evaluate finished projects
40% - Graphic Design and Social Media
 Plan, design, layout and produce invitations, brochures and advertisements
 Plan, design, layout and produce quarterly alumni magazine, print and online versions; multipage design of between 48 to120 pages per issue
 Prepare text, images, artwork and ads for reproduction in publications and online
 Responsible for adherence to graphic standards and the University’s printing policies and
procedures
 Stewardship and archival responsibility of magazines, files, photos, etc.
 Design, produce and maintain Nevada Silver & Blue website
 Develop, maintain and monitor social media presence
10% - Management
 Assist with strategy development and objectives for Nevada Silver & Blue magazine, print and
online versions
 Budget, prioritization of goals and resource planning
 Manage social media, including metrics, tracking and advertising
 Research and develop improved design and production processes
 Supervise freelance workers and train interns

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom
Incumbent works independently within the framework of the project and with minimum supervision
and has latitude for initiative and creativity. Incumbent is responsible for specific and specialized
projects with extended, multiple and overlapping work assignments and strict deadlines. More
complex issues are resolved with guidance from the Director of Donor Relations and VP DAR.
Impact
Successful publications, marketing materials and online/social media enhance the division and
University’s image and help achieve strategic communications and important fund raising goals.
Quality graphic design and adherence to the University’s established graphic standards plays an
integral role in the overall success of fund-raising and friend-raising on campus and in the community.
Decisions and performance by the position affect budgets, deadlines and relationships with campus
staff, the community, vendors, alumni and friends. DAR relies on the position for high level of
accuracy, personal enterprise and creativity.

 Art, production, photography, printing methods and typography
 Multi-page layout design and production, including printing production and live press check

graphic design, production and printing
 Legal, ethical considerations regarding content, photography, donor and student privacy, etc.
