1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
Under the general supervision of the Director of Counseling Services, the Manager, Clinical Cases
and Suicide Prevention, is responsible for directing clinical services to students and providing crisis
intervention and coordination of resources and services for students and staff. In addition, the
Manager, under the oversight of the Director, insures consistency and efficiency of initial intakes and
assessments, along with evaluation of psychological risk for individuals presenting for services.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage

40% - Direct Clinical Service
 Conduct clinical assessment/intake evaluations;
 Provide individual and group counseling
 Provide crisis intervention and critical incident responses
35% - Clinical Case Management
 Manage the day-to-day operation of direct client traffic, including crisis walk-ins and other
requests for immediate service
 Evaluate psychological risks to client safety at time of intake
 Conduct case management meetings to monitor client risks and to facilitate clinical
consultation regarding challenging treatment and case management concerns
 Assess service demands and needs and recommend departmental responses to increased
demands/needs
 Compile and maintain statistical data documenting our services, and to facilitate careful,
accurate program evaluation
 Oversee counselor assignments for clients following initial intakes; coordinating service needs
and referrals when appropriate
 Facilitate on and off-campus referrals and provide mental health consultations to diverse
campus constituencies
 Serve as a campus resource person for Counseling Services staff, university departments,
and community agencies to address acute and chronic student support needs
25% - Suicide Prevention Coordination
 Under supervision of Director, Counseling, develop and provide campus outreach programs
and presentations focused on suicide prevention and awareness, including the National
Suicide Prevention Awareness Week
 Coordinate efforts and activities with the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, the Jed
Foundation, and other similar agencies
 Maintain active involvement in, and leadership for, peer-mentoring groups and activities, most
particularly the Student Support Network grant program, focused on student suicide prevention
and awareness

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
Because of professional ethics, established standards for providers of mental health, and state and
federal laws, the Manager must function independently without constraints on any clinical aspects.
The position consults the Director on development of policies and long range planning for cases and
suicide prevention.
Impact:
Decisions and judgments made by the position impact the department, division, and university
administratively, clinically, and educationally. Administratively, such decisions and judgments will
contribute to the morale of the department and its ability to function effectively. Clinically, such
decisions will directly affect the health and welfare of the students served. Sound professional
judgments in the position contribute to the University’s goals of increased enrollment, retention and
persistence of students, and life-long learning. Sound professional judgments also results in positive,
respectful leadership with regard to diversity in employee perspectives and promote a safe
environment. Decisions and judgments reduce the potential for a successful suicide or homicide, a
malpractice suit against the employee and/or University, or psychological damage to a student and
criminal charges against the employee or employer.

Knowledge of:
 Mastery of a body of professional knowledge in the field of clinical social work
 Program development and delivery systems for psychological services, along with evaluation
strategies for such systems
 State and federal laws concerning the delivery of psychological services and case
management
 Professional ethics and standards for providers as stated by applicable professional
organizations, as well as state and federal law. Ethical use of technology and awareness of
the limitations of technology in providing counseling services
Skills:
 Psychological counseling with adults, including those from diverse backgrounds, case
management, crisis intervention, psychological risk evaluation, and evaluation of service
needs
 Good empathic, interpersonal, communication skills, developed within the context of diversity,
not just for the students but also for faculty and other professionals within and without the
university community
 Clinical supervision Master’s Degree candidates in social work
 Technology and data analysis skills
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills, using American Psychological Association
(APA) guidelines
 Time management and task management skills

Master’s Degree of Social Work (MSW) from a regionally accredited institution

Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
MSW and three years of counseling/clinical experience to include experience with
individual intake assessments, crisis intervention, and general case management and
at least one year of this experience in a college/university counseling setting
Preferred Licenses or Certifications: None

Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Clinical Social Worker in the state of Nevada with
requirement of obtaining the license within one year of starting date in the position
