Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the University. Attach an organizational chart for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. The Biology Department and its affiliated programs currently involve 26 faculty, 4 post-docs, 41 graduate students, 9 staff and approximately 520 undergraduate students. The Department annually generates over 2.4 million dollars in extramural research funds from activities that are dependent upon the physical facilities and programmatic support overseen by the Facilities Director. Supervise and direct use and maintenance of instructional, research, research support, office and administrative spaces for the Biology Department; shared laboratory and research support spaces (Biology, Biochemistry, Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Animal Biotechnology and Lab Animal Care Services) and off-site spaces of affiliated programs and support facilities (Stead teaching collection storage and preparation space, Biological Resources Research Center and Whittel Forest and Wildlife Area). Supervise and maintain inventory and maintenance and repair of all equipment used in departmental and shared facilities, including contracting for services. Manage budgets for repairs and supplies associated with Biology Department and shared spaces. Plan and coordinate renovation projects. Develop and administer Biology Department's applications/proposals for University wide programs for obtaining and upgrading instructional equipment, technology equipment and software. Manage departmental and shared computers, peripheral equipment and Department web page. Supervise technical support employee for this type equipment. Coordinate and direct activities of UNR Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and end users to ensure departmental compliance with applicable policies and laws regarding use, inventory and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials. Coordinate EH&S programs for work place safety (i.e. hood testing). Assist Department Chair by gathering, organizing and presenting data used for administration of non-academic Department functions. Resolve emerging problems with utilities (plumbing, electrical HVAC, etc.) and departmental and shared scientific equipment (capital and operating equipment) by arranging for, coordinating and supervising appropriate personnel performing corrective work. Plan and coordinate work associated with scheduled maintenance. 20% - Supervise departmental and shared information technology assets and campus network access; Monitor daily operations to ensure satisfactory functioning of IT assets and network access. Direct activities of student technical support employee to resolve emerging issues and to maintain currency of software. Maintain inventory of IT equipment to ensure programmed replacements of older equipment made in a timely manner. Maintain Department web page. 5% - Maintain departmental facilities and faculty/staff data bases and student e-mail list; Collect and maintain files from all available sources to permit reporting on facilities issues (inventory, use, allocation) and to communicate to all personnel associated with Department. 5% - Represent Department on facilities issues and committees; Deal with inquiries regarding facilities assignments, utilization and scheduling. Represent Department's facility needs to University administrators and committees and contractors (architects, engineers, etc.) considering existing and future facilities needs. Plan and coordinate facilities expansion and renovation. 5% - Purchasing and contract administration; Negotiate and administer service contracts for departmental and shared capital equipment. Consult with new faculty on start-up needs. Administer acquisition of new faculty start-up packages and later additions of capital equipment. Develop proposals for applications to administration sponsored programs for instructional equipment and IT equipment purchases. 5% - Environmental health and safety; Coordinate with and direct UNR Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Department to ensure user compliance with policies and laws regarding use, storage and disposal of regulated substances, inventory of same and work place safety. 5% - Instructional and research support; Supervise activities of undergraduates performing projects in Department spaces (i.e. Bio309, Museology and independent research). Knowledge required by the Facilities Director include: capabilities and operating prinicipals of a wide range of scientific equipment used for life sciences; laboratory operations policies and procedures regarding environmental health and safety issues; building systems operations (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.); construction project administration and management; IT equipment capabilities and operations; institutional policies, procedures and processes for business and administrative matters; policies and procedures associated with public and grant funded accouting systems. Skills required by the Facilities Director include: leadership and interpersonal communications skills for administration and supervision of students, nonacademic and classified personnel; proficiency with IT equipment and productivity, graphics and web editing software); technical skills for understanding and troubleshooting problems with building mechanical systems and laboratory equipment; business skills to assure effcient use of departmental and university funds for operations of facilities. The Facilities Director must be able to: work independently to manage and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, to all members of the campus community, vendors, contractors and the general public; take initiative to quickly resolve emerging problems which affect instruction, research, and administration; develop proposals for renovations and new facilities which meet the needs of end users using available resources.
