3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom
Recruitment and retention of students is essential to the mission of the division and the university.
Accessible and accurate advising is the foundation of successful recruitment and retention.
Considerable autonomy in decision making is required. Student issues are varied and complex. The
response to those issues directly impacts the university’ key metrics of graduation rate improvement..
The Manager must be capable of working with a high degree of creativity and initiative to oversee and
coordinate the student center. The Manager establishes short and long term plans for the division’s
advising, recruitment and retention activities. Advising for Nursing Pre-Majors is complex with over
400 at UNR and coordination with those from NSHE and other non Nevada institutions. Advising
through the DHS Student Center continues whereas other colleges have either primarily all faculty
advisors or transfer the student population for advising after first/second year status. The Manager
advises all DHS students.
Impact
The Manager interacts with students, parents, faculty and the public. Incorrect information can delay
a student’s progress. Problems in advisement can ultimately lead to losing the student from the
institution and also to difficulties in community relations. Providing correct, timely information when
advising enhances student satisfaction and produces good public relations; this in turn increases
recruitment and retention.
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 Higher education policies and procedures including student support services and recruitment
strategies
