1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division

The Director of Athletics Eligibility determines the academic eligibility of all student-athletes in
accordance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules. The position serves as the
liaison between the Office of Admissions and Records and the Athletics Academics and Compliance
Office while ensuring a system of internal controls that support the academic integrity of the
Intercollegiate Athletics Department (ICA) and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The position
oversees the Admissions & Records Assistant III as well as student employees. The position reports
to the Associate Registrar, Admissions and Records, within Enrollment Services.
The Director of Athletics Eligibility coordinates and provides training to college advisors, athletic
advisors and Admissions and Records staff and faculty in coordination with the Athletic Compliance
Office regarding student-athlete eligibility. The position oversees the Admissions & Records Assistant
III who tracks and monitors all student-athlete and potential student-athlete applicants to the
University as well as trouble shoot and problem solve registration and records issues related to
student-athletes. The position monitors and provides projections regarding the NCAA Academic
Progress Rate on a continual basis and projects the Graduation Success Rate for 2 additional
student-athlete cohorts.

35% - Verification of Athletic Eligibility
 Monitor the eligibility/admission status of all incoming student-athlete applicants, both
freshman and transfer
 Certify the eligibility of freshman and transfer student-athletes prior to participation in NCAA
athletics; including post season competition
 Certify the eligibility of all student-athletes prior to competition and assist in submitting a
Certified Eligibility List (CEL) and an “ineligible list” to the Athletics Academics and Compliance
Offices
 Verify that mid-year enrollees have met applicable admission/eligibility requirements
 Provide a preliminary evaluation of prospective transfer student-athletes to ensure they qualify
for admission and meet initial eligibility requirements
 Provide transfer evaluations to ensure admitted student-athletes meet all applicable NCAA
transfer requirements in addition to any conference requirements
 Monitor course grades of all student athletes and confirm grade point averages and student
level as meeting standards
 Serve as one of the campus experts in NCAA eligibility rules including current trends and
proposed legislation that would impact athletic eligibility
 Consult with and verify progress toward degree with college advisors
 Provide trainings as necessary to college and athletic advisors as well as Admissions and
Records personnel regarding eligibility of student-athletes
20% - Reporting and Documentation
 Provide eligibility/admission reports on prospective student-athletes to the Wolf Pack Athletics
Academics and Compliance Offices on a regular basis

Provide daily reporting of enrollment changes to the Athletics Academics and Compliance
Offices
Provide degree audit reports to assist in the advisement and choice of major for transfer
student-athletes consistent with NCAA progress rules
Ensure proper documentation and document retention for audit purposes
20% - Degree Progress
 Review student-athlete class schedules to ensure they are meeting the NCAA mandated
progress toward degree requirements
 Monitor degree progress of all student-athletes and provide regular reports of academic
progress to Athletic Advisors
 Prepare and submit annual Academic Progress Report (APR) data to the Athletics Academics
and Compliance Offices for NCAA submission
 Provide graduation data to Athletics Academics and Compliance Office for the preparation and
submission of graduation rate data to the NCAA
 Utilize NCAA compliance software in determining degree progress
 Monitors and provides projections regarding the NCAA Academic Progress Rate on a
continual basis
 Projects the Graduation Success Rate for 2 additional student-athlete cohorts.
25% - Supervision
 Supervises the Admissions and Records Assistant III
 Partially supervises student employees
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
In consultation with staff in the Compliance office, the Director determines and manages NCAA
athletic eligibility for all student-athletes. The Director must follow NCAA and conference rules and
bylaws precisely in determining the athletic eligibility of student-athletes. If there are issues of
interpretation, the Director must consult with the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, Director
of Compliance Services, the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), and/or the appropriate
Conference compliance office.
Impact:
If the Director makes any error in determining the eligibility of student athletes, the Compliance Office
is required to self-report their errors (violations) to the NCAA and/or Conference. The consequences
of an error of this type may include severe financial penalties to UNR, the loss of NCAA certification,
potential loss of Title 4 funding, a negative impact to UNR’s regional accreditation, and the removal of
athletic programs and their accompanying scholarship support to students. Any of these
consequences cause negative publicity for the entire University.
