1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the

University. Attach an organizational chart for the division, which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department.

This is a position funded through the Nevada University Center for Excellence in Developmental

Disabilities (UCED). The Youth Transition Director is a 1. FTE position that is primarily responsible for identifying, developing and administering externally funded projects that support the transition of youth with disabilities in Nevada from secondary education into vocational or career paths (employment or postsecondary education). These new projects will benefit the center, the individuals and families served and public education in Nevada. Through these projects the position provides leadership to the University, the College and the state by identifying, developing and administering projects that benefit Nevadans influenced and affected by developmental disabilities. These projects will involve program design, instruction and training, services, information dissemination, research and program evaluation, and collaboration with UCCSN administration, faculty and staff. The Youth Transition Director reports to the Director of the REPC/Nevada UCED.

Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job.

25% Supervision of project staff. Responsibilities include identifying staff roles and responsibilities and insuring adequate performance of duties for successful implementation of projects.

70% Management of Projects. Responsibilities include recruitment and training of Americorp members, implementation and performance of funded project activities, appropriate management of project funds, timely reporting of progress and summary of activities, facilitating project meetings, preparing presentations and manuscripts to demonstrate effectiveness of projects and secure future funding.

Develop and administer externally funded projects related to transitioning youth with disabilities.

Responsibilities include identification of projects for funding, proposal and budget preparation and submission, recruiting and hiring of project staff, and successful administration of project

5% Represent UCED at college, University, state and national levels. Responsibilities include task force, committee, strategic planning, and advisory board membership and participation.

3. Describe how the decisions and judgments made by this position and the results of work performed impact the department, division, and/or University as a whole.

The work performance, decisions, and judgments of the youth transition coordinator are critical to the success of the youth transition project in terms of the overall quality of the project and continuous information of the transition process in Nevada’s K-12 education system and the

Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). These qualities will influence the probability of continuing and expanding current and future funding, as well as development of future additional youth transition projects representing the University, College, and the REPC.

Essential knowledge, skills and abilities include:

KNOWLEDGE

-Comprehensive knowledge and expertise in customized employment, supported employment;

- Comprehensive knowledge and expertise in adult service systems and funding sources that includes potential for blending various funding streams.

- Knowledge of Assistive Technology utilized to accommodate people with disabilities into employment, postsecondary education and independent living.

- Comprehensive range of skills for program development, administration, assessment, evaluation and research services that include: team collaboration skills; ability to work with students, teachers, administrators, legislators, parents, volunteers and mentors and the public sector;

- Technical competence; sensitive to diversity issues; and strong interpersonal skills.

- Computer skills with proficiency in word processing software, spreadsheet, database.

ABILITIES

- Ability to identify, design and select appropriate sources of information for assessment and evaluation, data collection, information needs;

- Successful grant writing, administration and management, fiscal management of external funds, expertise in disabilities, particularly youth/young adult.

- Anticipating and meeting critical or time sensitive deadlines.

- Ability to teach university level courses in disability studies.

5. Describe the type of personal contacts encountered in performing the duties of the job. Explain the nature and purpose of these contacts, i.e., to provide services, to resolve problems, to negotiate.

Contacts will include the Nevada REPC and UCED staff, principal investigators (PIs), program/project managers/coordinators, supervisors and faculty, administration and staff through the UCCSN system; school personnel, parents/families, youth, state agency personnel, program managers, and employers. This position will also have contact with administrative staff from other UCEDs. Nature and purpose of these contacts will be to share youth transition information and services, training and instruction, to resolve problems, to develop innovative, cutting edge, state of the art programs for the state, work collaboratively with others and secure additional funding from external sources for continuation and expansion.

6. Indicate the minimum qualifications, which are necessary in filling this position should it become vacant. Please keep in mind the duties/responsibilities of the position rather than the qualifications of the incumbent. a. Masters or Doctorate (preferred) degree from a regionally accredited institution in special education, educational psychology, school psychology or related field.

Page 4 b. Doctorate with no experience or Masters with two years experience in applied secondary school settings, transition settings or adult serves and grant and project development and administration. c. No specific license or certificate is required for this position.
