1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Director, Student and Educational Affairs, is located in the Medical School Student Affairs office
(MDSA) in the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) and reports to the Associate Dean,
MDSA in Reno, and to the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs in Las Vegas. As a member of the
leadership team, the Director is responsible for the overall administration of student and educational
affairs, including UNSOM outreach and recruitment programs, counseling and career advising of premed and medical students. The Director oversees the assessment of program effectiveness, including
program evaluation and reporting. The incumbent establishes unit priorities and policies, and
manages fiscal budgets. The Director functions as the MDSA officer for the Las Vegas Campus and
for UNSOM undergraduate programs including the Baccalaureate-Medical Doctor (BS/MD)
Accelerated Pathway Program and the Post Baccalaureate Program.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

40% - Medical Student Services and Operations Support
 Lead and Manage the overall administration of UNSOM student affairs in Las Vegas
 Serve as delegated signature authority for a broad range of student documents, including
verifications of academic standing and elective applications
 Facilitate development of programs and services for UNSOM students; conducts needs
assessment and proposes solutions
 Keep faculty and staff apprised of relevant program changes, rules and compliance.
 Conduct data analyses, coordinate and prepare strategic planning reports, accreditation
reports and other ad hoc reports as needed
 Design and implement a comprehensive advising system for medical students
 Oversee academic support strategies, remediation, and supplemental instruction for students
on the Las Vegas campus with the MDSA staff
 Oversee the process and prepare Medical Student Performance Evaluation letters
 Organize and oversee UNSOM student events (e.g., Clinician’s Ceremony, Match Day, etc.) at
the Las Vegas Campus
 Oversee and organize student health and counseling services for the Las Vegas Campus
 Oversee fluid exposure procedures compliance for medical students statewide
 Organize and direct UNSOM orientation programs and events for Year III students
 Direct National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and Electronic Residency Application
Service (ERAS) process for UNSOM students statewide
 Direct medical student housing for the Las Vegas campus
30% - Educational Program Operations and Outreach Support
 Direct the development of strategies, including statewide and regional partnerships, to recruit
and retain students to support the goal of an inclusive and engaged community and the value
added to students, faculty and staff when diverse groups contribute to the educational
experience
 Direct student selection processes for the undergraduate programs of UNSOM
 Direct admissions interviewing processes for applicants at the Las Vegas campus
 Act as liaison with the Assistant Dean of Admissions to implement, evaluate, and report on
admissions processes, policies, and procedures

Oversee the student promotions and conduct for UNSOM undergraduate programs including
review and development of policies and procedures, report preparation on student progress
and conduct, and operations of the Academic Review and Promotions Committee for
undergraduate programs
Oversee medical student outreach electives including site development, placement processes,
evaluation of student performance, and problem solving, reporting to the Associate Dean
Support operational needs of the Las Vegas Campus, with the Associate Dean for Academic
Affairs, including communication of Information Technology (IT) needs and requirements;
credentialing processes for all medical and visiting students; requirements and policies for
student shadowing in hospital and other clinical facilities with UNSOM faculty
With the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, supervise classroom and educational needs
including equipment and maintenance and development of educational facilities
Develop partnerships for development of the expansion and development of undergraduate
programs statewide and combined degree programs for medical students on the Las Vegas
Campus
Develop and oversee clinical sites with Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to meet the
educational needs of medical students
Conduct medical student orientation and Transition Course to Year III at the Las Vegas
campus
Identify and develop educational scholarship opportunities – poster presentations, workshop
topic sessions and other publications/articles
Develop and monitor dual degree programs for medical students in southern Nevada
Develop and implement the Physician Assistant program
20% - Personnel Management
 Manage and coordinate human resources functions for Student Affairs, Outreach, and
Undergraduate programs
 Oversee the management of outreach and undergraduate programs
 Manage classified staff and administrative faculty evaluation process and staff positions in
MDSA and undergraduate programs department statewide
 Develop pipeline of potential UNSOM graduates for faculty recruitment/search prospects
 Supervise the professional and administrative support positions for day-to-day management of
UNSOM’s outreach, admissions, and student support functions.
10% - Budget and Data Management, Reporting, Analysis
 Develop and manage annual budgets for Student Affairs, Outreach, and Undergraduate
programs
 Work with faculty to document proposals for spending
 Provide fiscal management of student support and outreach expenditures including reporting
and compliance with all budget requirements
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Director exercises wide latitude in professional judgment in all student affairs decisions. The
incumbent takes action on issues related to personnel, students and operations, keeping the
Associate Dean, MDSA, apprised of potentially volatile situations that would negatively impact
UNSOM.
Impact:
Decisions and judgments made by the Director impact the effectiveness of utilization of human and
financial resources which directly impacts the success of the MDSA in meeting UNSOM’s goals and

objectives. Proper handling of student and human resource issues is essential to maintain a
productive organization. Good decision making and problem solving are important to the excellence of
student programs and services. Failure to perform as expected could result in failure to meet UNSOM
curriculum and medical student matriculation requirements or failure to provide a satisfactory
educational experience for medical students. Failure to monitor student needs may result in loss of
accreditation, litigation and future malpractice risk.
