1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
This position functions as the Center Director for the Northeastern Area Health Education Center
(NEAHEC), located within the Elko office of the Center for Education and Health Services Outreach
(CEHSO) of the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) and as the Rural Programs
Director for the Office of Rural Health also located in the Elko office of the CEHSO. The position
coordinates and oversees programmatic issues under the direction of the Statewide Directors of the
Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and State Office of Rural Health. This includes supervision and
direction in association with the Deputy Director and Associate Director of Rural programs of staff
located in the Elko Office.

30% - Northeastern AHEC Center Director
 Direct the Northeastern Nevada Area Health Education Center program in Elko, Nevada which
is one of three Centers statewide and the only center located administratively internally in the
School of Medicine
 Provide oversight in the programmatic function of the AHEC program in an eight county area
 Supervise a continuing education program, student recruitment, information resources and
health professions student rotations under the statewide direction of the Dean of the School of
Medicine and the Deputy Directors of the Statewide AHEC program
 Assist in telecommunications programs
 Prepare grants for state loan repayment, state office of rural health and miscellaneous small
grants including preparation of budgets, narrative, goals and objectives and program and
evaluation plans
10% - Information Dissemination
 Coordinate information dissemination program for outreach programs of the office, including
the production of an information dissemination method including written and electronic
10% Recruitment and Retention
 Coordinate recruitment and retention activities with key Nevada and national partner
organizations
 Supervise quarterly recruitment surveys, quarterly practice site surveys, site development
activities and practitioner referral and follow-up
10%Technical Assistance
 Manage technical assistance program of the state office of rural health for grant writing,
practitioner recruitment and retention, and other rural health issues
 Conduct needs assessments
 Coordinate community meetings, workshops and conferences including all aspects of publicity,
funding, curriculum development and faculty identification, site coordination activities
 Assist rural communities with identifying federal, state and foundation funding sources and
developing complete grant applications
 Provide grant writing workshops to rural communities upon specific requests

10% Coalition Support
 Provide leadership and support to statewide coalitions working to improve rural health care
including scheduling, facilitating meetings, establishing coalition goals and activities and
documenting outcomes of these coalitions
20% Nevada Health Service Corps Program Director
 Oversee program for Nevada Health Service Corps including federal progress reports,
cultivating program applicants, monitoring program participant activity to ensure compliance,
initial application screening, and ensuring appropriate payments and documentation of
program expenses
10% Supervision and Human Resources
 Assist in the supervision of staff in conjunction with the Assistant Director/Deputy Director and
Associate Director of Rural Programs for the Outreach Center located in Rural Nevada
 Primary responsibility of programmatic supervision as it relates to the mission of the AHEC
program in the Northeastern Nevada AHEC service area
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Decisions and judgments, under the general supervision of the Director, impact the university by:
*ensuring the continued funding of programs of the UNSOM, conferences and workshops
which are crucial to the outreach mission of the Center,
*meeting federal and state guidelines related to the Charter of the AHEC and ORH program
*determining the quality of technical assistance service provided to rural and underserved
Nevada communities,
*facilitating partnerships with community and agency partners in collaborative projects
*ensuring compliance with federal program requirements for several state and federal grant
programs
*providing quality service to NHSC program applicants

Internal:
School of Medicine Faculty & classified staff - supervision of Program Assistant and management
staff in completing surveys, fiscal functions, completing reports, scheduling meetings and coordinating
meeting facilities, and responding to outside inquiries
External:
Health professionals - responding to inquiries on NHSC funding programs, practice opportunities and
other available resources for physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, explain
contracts, request information documenting compliance and communicate regarding any program
difficulties or requirements with scholarship and loan repayment program participants. Assessment of
needs and gaps in rural health care.
Community leaders - responding to requests for information, help with grants, finding rural health
model program information, or development of coalition activities with hospital administrators,
economic development authority directors, educators, county officials, health providers and other
concerned Nevadans.
Partner agencies - develop partnerships with other agencies with complementary missions such as
the State Health Division, other university departments, health care organizations and federal
agencies to ensure collaborative efforts to write grants, develop programs, coordinate and evaluate
activities to improve rural health through recruitment and retention, training and advocacy.
Federal grant program managers - responding to requests for proposals, reporting requirements and
developing grant applications
Outside contractors and sponsors - working with printers, graphic artists, conference facilities, to
produce program materials and meetings and fund conferences and scholarships
