1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division

The position of Director, Nevada AIDS Education and Training Center (NV AETC), is located in the
University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) Office of Statewide Initiatives (OSI). The position
manages and administers a state-wide organization which provides a broad series of educational
programs and resources to health professionals regarding HIV/AIDS. As the science and clinical care
of HIV changes rapidly, the NV AETC serves as a crucial educational organization which coordinates
programs and resources to educate, support and prepare health professionals to administer quality
care. The Director represents AETC and OSI to the public and health care professionals and serves
as an advisor and participant in health infrastructure development in Nevada particularly as it pertains
to UNSOM outreach. The Director works with community agencies to provide technical assistance
and to help build capacity through collaborating in the areas of public health and HIV care
infrastructure (programs and services) in Nevada. The position creates and implements professional
AETC events, programs, activities, and resource outreach. The individual manages the AETC
operations, supervises personnel, and identifies and proposes new projects. The position reports to
the Principal Investigator (PI) on the grant within the Department of Internal Medicine in Reno at
UNSOM.

30% - AETC and Office of Statewide Initiatives Liaison
 Serve as the Nevada/UNSOM spokesperson and liaison for the Nevada AETC on campus and
statewide
 Maintain ongoing communication and collaborate extensively with the entire Nevada AETC
and with the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center (PAETC) at University of California,
San Francisco (UCSF), which is the primary funding source for the program, to assure that
programs are in consonance with National Guidelines, with the President’s AIDS Strategy, and
with sound continuing medical education principles
 Develop annual vision, strategies and program plans
 Participate in and serve on UNSOM Office of Medical Education, University, Statewide and
regional committees to ensure that the interests of the AETC are represented and to contribute
public health expertise to deliberations; help design and conduct evaluations of public health
programs and projects in Nevada
30% - AETC Assistance and Outreach
 Serve as an advisor and collaborator with community and government organizations to create
new projects and approaches to service delivery (use of telehealth to deliver services to rural
clients),approaches to continuing medical education ranging from on-line to long-term on-site
programs, and approaches to health care infrastructure improvements (HIV/AIDS policy) to
improve the organization’s public health outreach
 Assist organizations in grant writing (e.g., designing objectives, creating evaluation plans, etc.)
 Develop and implement professional AETC events, programs, activities, and resource
outreach to disseminate information about programs and activities
 Participate in Department, UNSOM, University of Nevada, Reno, state and regional
committees and public health activities to contribute to public health infrastructure in Nevada
 Conduct regular searches and outreach efforts to secure additional projects for the office in
consonance with staff skills, interests and with community health needs

20% - AETC Grant Administration
 Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on grants and assure that all University grant guidelines
are in compliance and serve as the Nevada contact with the PAETC and take responsibility for
all required reports, data, programming, evaluations, and other activities and documents to
assure program success and continued funding
 Accomplish scope of work for all other contracts through process of collaboration, delegation,
and representation; guide staff in understanding scope of work and in planning and
implementing all activities
 Prepare and maintain constant oversight of multiple budgets to assure program continuity and
growth from year to year
 Maintain good relations with health professionals and facilitate the development of new grants,
contracts, projects, professional papers, presentations and other dissemination activities in
consonance with grant requirements
 Develop and submit proposals for grants and contracts; assure that grant materials are in
order; oversee efforts to secure additional awards/resources and accomplish all scope of work
commitments
 Collaborate with staff and health care professionals to create, design, plan, coordinate,
implement and evaluate at least 20 educational events and programs per year (ranging from
one hour mini-courses to regional conferences)
20% - Human Resources Administration
 Manage and supervise professional and classified staff to assure that grant requirements are
addressed and collaborate within the OSI for grant, administrative and clerical support
 Assure that staffing is sufficient to accomplish scope of work on projects
 Conduct annual evaluations of staff and meet regularly with staff to ensure that all
administrative functions and requirements are managed
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Director independently makes decisions about the program and the budget. The Director is the
spokesperson for the Nevada AETC and represents program interests statewide and at regional
PAETC events. The Director represents UNSOM in the statewide community and makes decisions
regarding the AETC and outreach programs without direct supervision. The Director consults with the
PI on program implementation changes and receives general guidance but takes final responsibility
for program decisions.
Impact:
The position is highly visible, has a statewide and regional scope in outreach, is extremely
collaborative in nature, and is expected to contribute to the ongoing improvement in the care and
services established to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nevada and to respond to UNSOM
outreach services. The NV AETC makes an important contribution to AIDS/HIV care in Nevada and
has served to ensure that there are quality clinical services available. The AETC has a vital role that
extends from the UNSOM to the broad community. Success or failure of the incumbent to carry out
the responsibilities of the position impact the opportunities for faculty and community physicians to
benefit from educational resources and programs and improvements in patient care and impacts the
basic facilities and administrative funds that the grants generate for the University.
