1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Director of the Lawlor Events Center (LEC) oversees all bookings, center operating departments
and negotiating contracts with event promoters, various suppliers, community and University of
Nevada, Reno users. The Director reports to the Senior Associate Athletic Director, Internal
Operations, in the Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) department and supervises a team of full- and parttime staff members. The incumbent is responsible for hiring, evaluation of and, if necessary,
dismissal of all permanent employees. The Director is responsible for development and oversight of a
budget which must break even, as no state funding is available for LEC operation. Individual functions
as the liaison with university, city and state agencies and representatives and serves as the primary
public relations representative to local media and community leaders on behalf of LEC.

25% - Event Administration
 Books and contracts events, including financial negotiations
 Contacts promoters, tour managers and representatives at other venues to identify and seek
to attract potential shows and events
 Negotiates terms, conditions and pricing structure of each event
 Schedules events in coordination with other activities both on campus and in the community
for the purpose of maximizing attendance and minimizing conflicts
20% - Capital Improvement and Maintenance Projects
 Maintains five-year capital improvement and maintenance project list with annual review and
prioritization
 Assesses and implements capital improvement and maintenance projects as new project and
priorities require
 Maintains physical plant infrastructure in order to remain competitive and be a viable,
marketable resource to the university and community
20% - Human Resources Administration
 Hires, evaluates, and, if necessary, dismisses permanent employees
 Resolves human resources issues
 Prepares job descriptions and work performance standards for all permanent and part-time
employees (approximately 300 individuals)
 Completes or supervises the completion of performance evaluations for all permanent
employee
15% - Event Oversight
 Supervises on-scene LEC events including: planning, approval of staffing and security plans,
patron problem resolution, promoter/producer problems and event financial settlement
 Works with local authorities including police, fire and emergency medical personnel to assure
local ordinance compliance
 Ensure compliance with NCAA, Conference, and university rules and regulations (subject to
disciplinary or corrective action as set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement
procedures)

Attend as many contests as possible to show support for the student-athletes and coaching
staff
20% - Fiscal Administration
 Develops budget and monitors general financial accounts of LEC revenue and expenditures
 Serves as contract administrator for LEC portion of ticketing, food & beverage,
signage/sponsorship, exclusive beverage contracts to ensure contractual obligations are met,
maximum revenue is produces and customer expectations are met

supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Director makes the decisions which set the course for LEC operations.
Impact:
Daily decisions must be made which affect LEC’s financial success and the attitude of the general
public toward LEC. Since their exposure to LEC is, in many cases, the only direct contact the public
has with the University, the quality of the exposure is critical to the development and retention of the
university’s public image and credibility in the community.

 The live entertainment and live sports industry
 Operations, physical plant and maintenance required for public assembly facilities, including
fire regulations
 Guest Services and crowd management best practices and techniques
 Budget development, cost accounting and accounts maintenance and monitoring
 Appropriate legal issues pertaining to public assembly facilities
 Risk management as it pertains to public access,
 Local building codes, Office of Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations

Bachelor’s Degree and six years, Master’s Degree and four years, or a Doctoral
Degree and two years of work experience to include:
 Management or supervisory capacity with a major arena, convention, multipurpose, event or facility or a position of equivalent responsibility
 Facility management including long-range planning, maintenance and financial
accountability
Preferred Licenses or Certifications: Certified Facilities Executive (CFE)
