Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Director, Community Based Medical Education, reports directly to the Associate Dean for Medical Education under the Office of Medical Education (OME). The Director is responsible for the Northern Nevada community-based preceptorship programs within the Practice of Medicine and Introduction to Patient Care preceptorships and statewide summer programs. Within these programs the Director is responsible for the overall development, support, and monitoring of the course(s). The Director serves the University School of Medicine (UNSOM) and the University as a community relations representative within the community of preceptors and medical centers in Northern Nevada. The position establishes sustainable relationships between the community and UNSOM and facilitates the introduction of physicians to the possible roles and responsibilities as a preceptor and other possible student learning opportunities within the community. The Director works with University and UNSOM faculty to ensure that overall the partnerships are well balanced, efficient, coherent and responsive to community partners. 2. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 40% - Practice of Medicine (POM) Preceptorships Manage and administer clinical preceptorships for all first- and second-year medical students including providing community-based outreach to recruit, retain and orient all POM preceptors (community based primary care physician teachers) to the program Match all students and preceptors based on criteria acquired from individual meetings, assessing, providing feedback and grading of assignments; provide conflict resolution for both students and preceptors, and monitor end-of-semester evaluations Sustain partnerships with area hospitals and medical centers by providing support and required documentation and training of students (i.e., adherence to varied regulations, standard procedures for facility, Federal regulations, etc.) Provide small group facilitation Collaborate with other POM Block Directors and faculty to plan, coordinate and implement curricular blocks Participate in and support division-wide courses, programs, research and committees (i.e. Standardized testing, professionalism, scholarship, medical curriculum) Serve on curriculum committee and curricular reform committees 35% - Recruitment, Retention, and Coordination of Clinical Adjunct Faculty Coordinate all OME adjunct clinical faculty appointments (approximately 350) for related courses and UNSOM activities (i.e., electives and Student Outreach Clinic); maintain documentation processing and manage OME Adjunct Clinical Faulty database Supervise and evaluate Classified staff Efficiently communicate and work with staff to arrange course support, provide information and referrals, and resolve complications Initiate and coordinate annual community preceptor appreciation and recognition events (i.e., Preceptor Recognition Program) for all preceptors statewide Facilitate scheduling and coordination of community/preceptors/student events and activities Contribute to UNSOM website and other media opportunities to share successes and developments in community-based medical education Position Description – Director, Community Based Medical Education Page 3 Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Faculty Development, Director of Continuing Medical Education, and Director of Development to streamline adjunct clinical faculty opportunities and events Communicate information to administration related to the updating and dissemination of policies related to community partnerships, student and the University 25% - Summer Programs, Service Learning, and Group Facilitation Coordinate statewide summer preceptorship programs for approximately 95% of medical students which includes surgery, emergency medicine, pediatric specialty and communitybased preceptorships Provide community-based outreach to recruit, retain and orient all preceptors and work with statewide hospitals and medical centers to ensure compliance with community partnership requirements (i.e., medical center requirements, student authorizations to work, licensures, immunizations, mutual management of the curricular structure, and student supervision) Collaborate with all UNSOM faculty to coordinate clinical research projects for student involvement Provide coordination for scholarly concentration in service learning and for fourth year electives in Service Learning (320-hour clinical experience) Advise and remain in contact with the students as a mentor throughout the first two years and monitor students’ progress with clinical rotations, research and assignments Assess program by use of student and preceptor reactions and suggestions and make recommendations Facilitate and mentor first year group of students for Foundations Block (Clinical Problem Solving and Ethics/Professionalism); guide the group through a progressive disclosure patient case designed to provide context to many of the basic principles that have been and will be taught within the week; facilitate small group through several clinical cases which depict ethical and professional dilemmas 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The Director has a significant level of responsibility and freedom to ensure that the course goals and objectives are met, monitoring student and preceptor successes, grading and evaluating students, and ensuring that the recruitment and retention of the appropriate number and precise preceptors (volunteers) are attained. The individual must build and maintain rapport with community preceptors in order to make assessments and decisions. The Director is a highly visible position within the UNSOM and physician community in Northern Nevada and statewide and is responsible for communicating the priorities and expectations of UNSOM to the adjunct clinical faculty. The position consults with the Associate Dean on student-preceptor problems and when preceptor recruitment goals cannot be achieved. The individual consults on long-term mission and goal planning of the unit and on budget development for accomplishment of goals. Impact: In order to promote and recruit physicians to the role of adjunct faculty for a community-based medical school, the position is solely responsible for recruitment and retention of adjunct faculty and establishment of a strong partnership. Communication is vital to fulfill the mission of UNSOM. If the Director is unable to recruit the required number of preceptors or is unable to create a solid preceptor base to ensure reliability, the course program would fail and this could in turn significantly affect all levels of success for students, departments, UNSOM and the University.
