1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Manager, Advising, Recruitment and Retention, oversees academic advising and the assessment
of advising and training programs for academic advisors and faculty in the College of Science (COS).
The individual directs and coordinates retention and recruitment activities in COS and works with the
Dean to implement new programs in these areas. The incumbent is responsible for professionalizing
the entire undergraduate advising system within COS with approximately 2000 majors. The position
handles all marketing related activities. The position reports to the Dean, COS.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

20% - Academic Advising
 Provide academic advising, ensuring that undergraduates majors and minors within COS
receive the information and mentoring necessary for their retention within the institution
assuring timely progress toward graduation; handle more complex student advising
 Supplement the faculty advising received at the departmental level
 Train all new COS faculty and professional advisors and meet with them regularly to provide
updates
 Inform student, faculty, administration, and the public of current curriculum as well as
departmental, college, and university academic requirements and procedures
 Advise faculty advisors on policies, procedures, and processes related to advising
 Troubleshoot and resolve any issues or concerns related to advising COS undergraduate
students
 Plan, supervise and coordinate new and transfer student orientation sessions for COS
 Plan, supervise and coordinate COS welcome/advising events for incoming freshmen
20% - Coordination and Assessment of Advisement
 Train, supervise, and evaluate all professional academic advisors
 Oversee academic advising by COS faculty advisors: ensure accuracy of advising by acting as
liaison with college faculty; implement a comprehensive training program for college advisors;
design, implement, and maintain an ongoing program of evaluation of advising at the
departmental and program levels
 Supervise and coordinate mandatory advising for incoming COS freshmen, both at off-campus
events and in on-campus group and individual sessions as well as other groups of COS
students (e.g., second-semester freshmen, students on academic probation), as mandated by
higher administration
 Develop, implement, and maintain a program for the ongoing assessment of academic
advising in the college, and in each department and program of the college; work with the
dean and associate dean to implement a program recognizing excellence in academic
advising
 Coordinate the delivery of SCI 110 - First Year Experience: Science and Mathematics and SCI
310: Transfer Student Success, a course for entering students; serve as resource for others
teaching similar courses; teach up to 2 sections of SCI 310 per year
 Maintain COS website related to advising information and resources

30% - Recruitment
 Coordinate COS recruitment efforts: initiating, developing, and implementing specific
recruitment events and programs both on and off campus
 Develop and purchase all COS marketing and recruitment materials
 Develop and evaluate recruitment procedures and processes within the college
 Evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of recruitment events and procedures involving the COS;
cooperates with stakeholders to recommend improvements
 Design and oversee the maintenance of a COS recruitment database
 Improve and maintain COS website related to recruitment activity
 Supervise responses to email service to answer questions from students and public
 Train and supervise student ambassadors to assist at all COS recruitment activities and
functions
 Represent COS at all University-wide recruitment and outreach activities and events
20% - Retention and Outreach
 Plan, implement and coordinate retention strategies
 Implement strategies and programs to retain students who are currently on academic warning,
probation, and disqualification
 Track COS students nominated and selected for scholarships and other aid
 Facilitate student interaction with faculty and professional groups affiliated with the college
 Strengthen outreach efforts to local community and interest groups with particular attention to
underrepresented groups
 Recruit, train, and maintain student advisory board; meet with department student
representatives and ASUN senators each semester to get feedback and assess concerns
 Work with the student advisory board to get feedback, assess student concerns, and develop
new programs to recognize undergraduate student achievement
 Develop and implement procedures in conjunction with Admissions and Records to assess
retention by department; tracks changes over time
 Provide liaison between COS, other deans offices, and Student Services
 Promote the college and its programs to high schools, community colleges, and other
organizations in the community
10% - Student Support
 Serve as a liaison between COS and other campus offices including the offices of Prospective
Students, Admissions and Records, School of Medicine (BS/MD program), UNLV School of
Dental Medicine (BS-DMD), Residential Life, and other support services
 Participate in the university-wide Target 500 and Academic Advising Advisory Board
committees representing COS
 Nominate scholarship winners for COS scholarships
 Work with the Director of the WISE (Women in Science & Engineering) Living Learning
Community to market the program, help recruit participants, and assist in developing programs
and expectations
 Coordinate admissions process for BS-DMD program
 Work on special projects, as delegated by the Dean, related to the college’s mission in
advising, recruitment, and retention

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The recruitment and retention of quality students is essential to the mission of the college and the
institution. Accessible and accurate advising is crucial to the achievement of those goals. The
Director’s responsibilities must be performed with autonomy and with a high degree of creativity and
initiative. The position consults the Dean in the strategic planning and mission of the advising,
recruitment and retention area for COS.
Impact:
Relaying incorrect information can delay a student’s progress or result in failure to retain the student.
Providing accurate information, whether advising or recruiting, means good public relations and, in
turn, increased recruitment and retention. The Director must be able to deal with diverse audiences;
excellence in this area has the potential to increase enrollment, open lines of communication, and
enhance the university’s image and effectiveness in the community.
