Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Director, Advising, Recruitment and Retention, oversees academic advising, the supervision of administrative faculty advisors, the assessment of advising, as well as training programs for faculty advisors in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). The individual directs and coordinates retention and recruitment activities in CLA and works with the Associate Dean to implement new programs in these areas. The incumbent is responsible for professionalizing the entire undergraduate advising system within CLA with approximately 3500 majors. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 25% - Academic Advising Supervise and coordinate new and transfer student orientation sessions (at least 14 sessions, and serving at least 600 students), including production of student handbook and presentation, hiring and training of at least ten summer staff members Train all new administrative faculty advisors and faculty advisors and meet with them regularly to provide updates Provide academic advising, ensuring that undergraduates majors and minors within CLA receive the information and mentoring necessary for their retention within the institution assuring timely progress toward graduation Advise administrative faculty advisors and academic faculty advisors on policy, procedures, and processes related to advising Inform students, faculty, administration, and the public of current curriculum as well as departmental, college, and university academic requirements and procedures Manage budget related to advising, and summer orientation activities Coordinate NCAA eligibility in conjunction with Admissions and Records and Wolf Pack academic advisors Serve as a liaison for students who are transitioning from the Advising Center for Undecided Students Supplement the faculty advising received at the departmental level (in particular when faculty are not on contract) 30% - Coordination and Assessment of Advisement Supervise and coordinate mandatory advising for incoming CLA freshmen, both at off-campus events and on-campus group and individual sessions as well as other groups of CLA students (e.g., second-semester freshmen, students on academic probation), as mandated by higher administration Train, supervise, and evaluate administrative faculty advisors Oversee academic advising by CLA faculty advisors: ensures accuracy of advising by acting as liaison with college faculty; implements a comprehensive training program for college advisors; designs, implements, and maintains an ongoing program of evaluation of advising at the departmental and program levels Design, seek resources, implement, and maintain a program for the ongoing assessment of academic advising in the college, and in each department and program of the college; works with the Dean and Associate Dean to implement a program recognizing excellence in academic advising Position Description – Director, Advising, Recruitment, & Retention (CLA) Page 3 Develop and implement mandatory advising for successful transition and degree completion for transfer students Coordinate implementation of advanced registration with Admissions and Records personnel for incoming freshmen Design plan for CLA advising center; determine organization and implementation of supervision and training for staff and student employees. Accessible and accurate advising is crucial to the achievement of those goals. The Director’s responsibilities must be performed without direct supervision and with a high degree of creativity and initiative. Impact: Relaying incorrect information can delay a student’s progress or result in failure to retain the student. Providing accurate information, whether advising or recruiting, means good public relations and, in turn, increased recruitment and retention. The Director must be able to deal with diverse audiences; excellence in this area has the potential to increase enrollment, open lines of communication, and enhance the university’s image and effectiveness in the community. 4.
