Essential Function: Sedentary Work
Description: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force
frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary
work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

The Coordinator, Music Recruitment, is located in the Music Department within the College of
Liberal Arts. The individual serves as the primary flute instructor for music majors and acts as
advisor to all flute students. The individual manages and administers all scholarship awards to
Music students, supervises and manages recruiting and retention efforts by the Music
Department, including more than 40 full and part-time faculty, and advises the approximately
60-70 Music minors.

25% - Flute Teaching
 Teach up to eight students (varying credits) of MUSA 113/313/713 or MUSA 157 per
semester
 Teach up to one credit of MUSE 142/442 OR MUSE 143/443 per semester
 Co-Teach MUS 388 every 4th semester
25% - Music Scholarship Coordination
 Coordinate auditions for prospective music students to include distributing publicity to
appropriate locations; updating audition information on the website; arranging for
audition schedules in Reno and Las Vegas; managing a database for scheduling; and
organizing the actual audition day with administrative support, student volunteer support,
and faculty assignments
 Implement Scholarship Awards program by organizing and managing internal divisions
of scholarship awards recommended by faculty and matching awards criteria to eligible
qualifying students (which includes matching specific criteria from 30+ individuallynamed scholarship funds at different monetary amounts to eligible applicants who have
been recommended by faculty)
 Coordinate generation of award letters for informing students and monitor accepted
awards and any remaining scholarship funds for late or spring awards

Verify student data on MyNevada to ensure eligibility of scholarships are maintained
Proactively encourage students to declare correct majors in order to ensure eligibility by
monitoring their status in MyNevada and contacting them
Co-supervise Database Manager (letter of appointment faculty) in collaboration with
assigned classified staff employee
20% - Recruitment Coordination
 Coordinate faculty recruiting travel by managing recruiting travel budget and working
with Classified staff who will be processing travel; ensure that all areas (jazz,
instrumental, vocal, string) are using recruiting budget equitably
 Attend Office of Prospective Students (OPS) sponsored activities
 Attend Nevada Bound events
 Develop and maintain relationships with the Office of Prospective Students in Las Vegas
 Pursue new recruiting techniques and work with faculty to implement new ideas
 Maintain database of recruiting activities; analyze information to determine effectiveness
of current efforts and recommend improvements/changes to management
 Co-supervise Database Manager (letter of appointment faculty) in collaboration with
assigned classified staff employee
10% - Advising Music Minors & Bachelor of Music–Flute Applied Majors
 Advise students seeking a music minor
 Meet with flute students individually to outline their sequencing of courses and counsel
and guide them through their degree plans
10% - Flute Area Coordination
 Organize and manage a flute studio within Department of Music
 Recruit new flute students through outreach in varied locations
 Maintain a high level of personal artistry by practicing, participating in professional
ensembles, and seeking out professional developments via flute workshops,
conferences, and master classes
 Coordinate visits from guest artists as needed
 Coordinate Flute Day, which is an annual event on campus that strives to promote the
music program by presenting guest artists and providing information to current and
prospective music students, i.e., Washoe County, Clark County, regional high schools,
and other organizations
 Work with ensemble directors to staff the flute sections of University ensembles
10% - Retention Oversight
 Attend Music Department recitals and concerts
 Check MyNevada pages for majors, minors, and/or scholarship recipient students at the
end of each semester to make sure they are maintaining a GPA to remain eligible for
scholarships and contacting students who are having academic difficulties; inform the
student’s faculty advisor of issues
 Coordinate communications between applied faculty, ensemble directors, and music
core instructors to make sure that students are on track to graduate and also continue to
meet eligibility requirements to receive scholarship awards
 Work with box office manager to ensure that scholarship students are fulfilling their
ushering obligations
 Create and/or revise semester-by-semester degree plan templates for both programs

3. Describe the types of decisions the position(s) makes independently as part of the core

The Coordinator position is unique in that it has several individual areas of responsibility that
must be performed, often without direct supervision and with a high degree of creativity and
initiative but within university and department policies and guidelines: flute area coordination,
scholarship coordination, recruitment and retention of prospective and current students, acting
as an advisor to music minors and Bachelor of Music – Applied Flute Majors, and teaching
academic flute courses.
The position independently implements the Music scholarship awards program by participating
in University meetings, ensuring forms are current on the website, processing application forms
from prospective students, and reviewing and verifying student data. The position receives
recommendations of awards from Music faculty, matches students with awards criteria,
discusses with the Chair and Director, SOA, implements the internal division of scholarship
awards, and tracks students’ eligibility for receiving an award to ensure criteria are met.
The position analyzes recruitment and retention data and recommends courses of action to
management to improve activities. The Coordinator makes decisions on prioritization of current
and new outreach locations to recruit students and coordinates audition scheduling for
prospective students with public school music teachers in Nevada and in Western
Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) states, Washoe County School District, Clark County School
District, Las Vegas Academy of the Arts, and others. The position must be knowledgeable in all
areas of music education in order to advise students on Music Department degree curriculum
and scholarship requirements and guidelines.

The position works closely with the Music Department Chair to resolve issues related to
scholarships, recruiting, and advising. For example, the position must request approval on
scholarship award exceptions, consults on disputes between applied faculty regarding funding
allocations and their resolution, discusses faculty recruitment travel priorities, and consults on
advising anomalies such as waivers or unusual substitutions. The position also consults with
the Chair and/or Director of School of the Arts on budget allocation and distribution for
recruitment activities.
