Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs and Resource Management in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), assists the Dean in all matters relating to administration of the College. The Associate Dean is expected to work with the Dean to plan, promote, and develop innovative practices across CLA and to enhance an environment that supports academic excellence. In particular, the Associate Dean aids in the management of temporary instructional budget planning, space allocation within the CLA, and faculty affairs including training and mentoring of faculty and activities related to faculty concerns, including professional development, awards, and faculty searches. The position reports to the Dean, CLA. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Level of Freedom: The Associate Dean plays a key role the operations of CLA regarding faculty affairs and professional development of faculty, coordinating and developing CLA space and facilities use, overseeing the temporary instructional budget and resource management, and handling special projects and assignments from the Dean. The professional development and expertise of the faculty is critical for the College’s ability to operate as a first class liberal arts college. The individual must be flexible, take initiative, and work independently, creatively, and efficiently with little direct supervision and with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The Associate Dean has broad latitude for un-reviewed actions and is evaluated on long-term results of actions and broad policy effectiveness. The incumbent recommends and influences long-term policies relating to major issues of the College to the Dean. Impact: The decisions and judgments made by the Associate Dean affect the image of the College and its departments among current and prospective faculty and among colleagues; the professional experience of individual faculty members in the College, particularly in regard to their progress toward tenure and promotion, scholarly/creative endeavors, and the resolution of problems related to the performance of their duties; the working relationships of staff within the Dean’s Office; the involvement of various faculty and students in the work of the College; and the nature of various issues, ideas, and projects presented to the Dean for his/her decision. 4.
