1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs and Resource Management in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA),
assists the Dean in all matters relating to administration of the College. The Associate Dean is
expected to work with the Dean to plan, promote, and develop innovative practices across CLA and to
enhance an environment that supports academic excellence. In particular, the Associate Dean aids in
the management of temporary instructional budget planning, space allocation within the CLA, and
faculty affairs including training and mentoring of faculty and activities related to faculty concerns,
including professional development, awards, and faculty searches. The position reports to the Dean,
CLA.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

35% - Faculty Affairs and Professional Development
 Organizes and implements new faculty orientation and tenure workshops
 Mentors new department chairs
 Oversees the faculty search process and conducts interviews with candidates
 Coordinates faculty awards and fellowships
 Manages faculty sabbatical and professional development leave applications
 Serves as liaison to the Scholarly and Creative Activities
20% - Scholarship and Research
 Maintains a record of scholarly activity that includes but may not be limited to research
presentations at academic conferences and professional meetings and publication of research
in appropriate venues and in accordance with standards in the field of specialization
15% - CLA Space and Facilities
 Serves as point of contact on issues regarding assignment, renovation, deferred maintenance,
and use of university space with CLA
 Strategizes best practices for effective use of space
 Develops plans and proposals for the allocation of space and acquisition when opportunities
arise
10% - Temporary Instructional Budget and Resource Management
 Oversees the temporary instructional budget for the college
 Works with the Dean and the college fiscal officer on the formulation of annual and biennial
budget requests
 Solicits proposals for research and instructional equipment and support
 Responds to requests for proposals from central administration for new equipment
15% - Special Projects and Assignments
 Represents the College and/or Dean’s Office on various committees at diverse levels, such as
the Scholarly and Creative Activities Committee and the CLA Planning Committee and ad hoc
subcommittees, VPUE associate deans’ committee, university search committees or task
forces, or community outreach efforts
 Reviews department bylaws prior to final approval by the Dean
 Serves as signature authority as delegated by the Dean
 Complete other projects as assigned

5% - Teaching and Supervision of Students
 Supervises undergraduate Honor’s theses in home department and area of specialty
 Supervises master’s and doctoral programs of study for graduate students in home
department and area of specialty
 Provides professional mentoring to master’s and doctoral students as a member of advisory
committees within home department and beyond (as outside member or graduate school
representative)
 As the Dean directs and department specifies, otherwise teach appropriate courses in the
home department
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Associate Dean plays a key role the operations of CLA regarding faculty affairs and professional
development of faculty, coordinating and developing CLA space and facilities use, overseeing the
temporary instructional budget and resource management, and handling special projects and
assignments from the Dean. The professional development and expertise of the faculty is critical for
the College’s ability to operate as a first class liberal arts college. The individual must be flexible, take
initiative, and work independently, creatively, and efficiently with little direct supervision and with
considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The Associate Dean has broad latitude
for un-reviewed actions and is evaluated on long-term results of actions and broad policy
effectiveness. The incumbent recommends and influences long-term policies relating to major issues
of the College to the Dean.
Impact:
The decisions and judgments made by the Associate Dean affect the image of the College and its
departments among current and prospective faculty and among colleagues; the professional
experience of individual faculty members in the College, particularly in regard to their progress toward
tenure and promotion, scholarly/creative endeavors, and the resolution of problems related to the
performance of their duties; the working relationships of staff within the Dean’s Office; the involvement
of various faculty and students in the work of the College; and the nature of various issues, ideas, and
projects presented to the Dean for his/her decision.
