3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The AD has a high level of independence in decision making concerning the breadth and scope of the
academic intervention required for the students. The AD makes decisions about the type of academic
support, programs and methods needed to most effectively address the needs of program
participants. The AD makes employment and evaluation decisions about program tutors. The AD
seeks guidance from the Director as necessary for difficulties, strategy, and exceptions concerning
students’ academic improvement plans. The AD manages the academic support budget.
Impact:
Failure to provide assistance results in lowered participant retention and graduation rates. The
services provided by the academic coordinator are essential to the academic success of participants
and to the success of the program in meeting designated outcome objectives. Failure to meet such
objectives could result in the loss of federal funding. Failure to stay within budget could result in overexpenditures from the general program budget. Any errors of judgment reflect negatively on the
program. Failure to maintain cordial, positive relationships with external programs and centers will
negatively impact the ability of the program to impact the climate for first generation and low income
students in the TRiO Scholars Program and on the campus at large.
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 Program evaluation and assessment
 Budget management
 College level mathematics
 Academic advising and student development, learning theory, and curriculum development
 Computer based academic support programs
 Issues facing project eligible students
 Tutoring Techniques
Skills:
 Strong verbal and written communication
 Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not
limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email)
 Interpersonal and human relations skills
Ability to:
 Design data collection processes and to analyze results
 Work independently, adhere to deadlines, and multitask effectively
 Work with a diverse population of students (first generation, low-income college students in a
postsecondary academic support services program) and to work collaboratively with multiple
service providers
 Effectively address diversity issues(disabilities, cultural and ethnicity).
 Manage, supervise, and develop staff to maintain required level to perform and to achieve
project goals
 Show tact and diplomacy in sensitive situations
