Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Assistant Director (AD), TRIO Scholars Program, recruits, trains, and supervises the TRIO Scholars' academic support staff including administrative faculty, student staff, and drop-in tutoring facilitators and academic tutors. The AD provides direct academic assistance to project participants in the following areas: individual tutoring in pre-college and college level mathematics, workshops on academic success topics, and academic counseling for students with math and science majors. The AD is responsible for scheduling academic support activities, measuring participation and outcomes, and making recommendations based on program assessment. The AD has primary responsibility for departmental budget, computer lab management, web page maintenance, and online application process. The position is under the guidance of and reports to the Program Director, TRIO Programs. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 30% - Staff Recruitment, Training and Supervision Recruit and train tutors to support the academic needs of students in the TRIO Scholars Program Supervise administrative staff and all student staff involved with providing academic support to participants 30% - Assessment Define learning outcomes for all segments of the academic support program Measure success of academic program activities to achieve learning outcomes Report formative and summative assessment results to the Director at established intervals during each program year Modify activities as needed to meet learning outcomes and program objectives Assist the Director with all aspects of program assessment including the annual federal report and other UNR reports as needed Assist the Director in designing and completing assessment reports for all aspects of the program, particularly in the area of data collection and analysis 20% - Administration Support Assist with activities related to general program administration including student intakes and general program recruitment Participate in project, unit, and division meetings Prepare and manage the budget for the academic support component of the TRIO Scholars Program 20% - Tutoring, Coordination of Academic Support Services and Technology Assistance Provide individual tutoring in basic and college level mathematics and science courses on an as needed basis Coordinate tutoring referrals and tutoring progress reports for program participants who are served through the Tutoring Center Coordinate, design and deliver academic workshops on topics such as time management and note taking that will enhance the academic success of project participants either through direct classroom presentations and/or by designing modules that can be accessed through the program web page Coordinate tutoring services available through other university resources as appropriate Maintain project computer lab Monitor and evaluate participant use of computers Provide computer lab orientation to participants as needed Serve as the technology liaison between the program and the UNR IT Department Position Description – Assistant Director, TRIO Scholars Program Page 3 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The AD has a high level of independence in decision making concerning the breadth and scope of the academic intervention required for the students. The AD makes decisions about the type of academic support, programs and methods needed to most effectively address the needs of program participants. The AD makes employment and evaluation decisions about program tutors. The AD seeks guidance from the Director as necessary for difficulties, strategy, and exceptions concerning students’ academic improvement plans. The AD manages the academic support budget. Impact: Failure to provide assistance results in lowered participant retention and graduation rates. The services provided by the academic coordinator are essential to the academic success of participants and to the success of the program in meeting designated outcome objectives. Failure to meet such objectives could result in the loss of federal funding. Failure to stay within budget could result in overexpenditures from the general program budget. Any errors of judgment reflect negatively on the program. Failure to maintain cordial, positive relationships with external programs and centers will negatively impact the ability of the program to impact the climate for first generation and low income students in the TRiO Scholars Program and on the campus at large. 4.
