1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Assistant Director, Residential Education, manages the Residential Life education programs and
staffing initiatives. The Assistant Director advises and refers staff and students for academic support.
The incumbent maintains full-time office hours and is available as needed to attend evening/weekend
programs and training and responds to emergency/crisis situations 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
Summer duties include assisting with summer training, new student orientation, program planning for
the academic year, and other related duties. The position reports to the Director of Residential Life.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

30% - Staff Recruitment, Selection and Training
 Coordinate recruitment and selection processes, inclusive of diversity, for graduate and fulltime residence hall staff
 Design and implement a comprehensive fall, spring, and ongoing training program for
graduate and full-time residence hall staff
 Direct the design and implementation of student staff recruitment, selection and training
programs
 Ensure that all Residential Life recruitment, selection, and training programs meet department
and University goals, objectives, and policies
 Assess recruitment, selection and training programs for continuous quality improvement
30% - Academic Initiatives
 Collaborate with University academic programs to develop and implement Living Learning
Communities
 Ensure the programmatic goals of individual Living Learning Communities are implemented
and evaluated
 Coordinate the recruitment and placement of students into Living Learning Communities
 Manage department retention, academic success and academic intervention programs such
as Mapworks, 4.0 Luncheon, etc.
 Direct the academic recognition programs for on campus students
 Manage Residential Life support for University student orientation programs and events
 Coordinate advisory board for Living Learning Communities
 Compile data on academic initiatives
 Develop learning objectives and assessment tools for academic initiatives
30% - Department Administration
 Observe, evaluate, and provide feedback to the appropriate departmental staff on the quality
of the following: housing and dining facilities and their furnishings and equipment; service
provided by departmental staff, dining and custodial services of the department; programs
presented by the department; and/or materials distributed by the department
 Participate in the strategic planning of the short-term and long-term department initiatives
 Participate in setting departmental policy
 Assist the Director in developing and overseeing budgets for assigned areas
 Assist in directing the development and implementation of assessment and evaluation of
Residential Life educational programs and initiatives

Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures, including but limited to, Residential
Life staff employee records and discipline
Other duties or department tasks as assigned by the Director to include but not limited to
judicial board, license appeals, Living Learning Communities, academic intervention and
recognition programs, safety committee, family housing, staff training and selection, leadership
advisement and training, programming committees, retention programs, and other university
committees
10% - Student Resident Recruitment
 Supervise the coordination of residence hall tours and overnight stays for prospective student
residents
 Create and implement Living Learning Community information for marketing/recruitment
efforts
 Assist with and represent department through attendance and participation in/at University
recruitment events and activities
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
Residential positions require that decisions are made 24 hours/day and 7 days/week. Few other
departments are available at those hours to assist in decision making. Residential living not only
supplements and supports the student’s academic endeavors, but it also supports the individual
emotionally and physically. Decisions are often made under some pressure and in a rapidly changing
environment. The position must apply broad policies to problems and situations not falling clearly
within precedents. More complex issues are resolved with guidance from the Director.
Impact:
Errors in judgment and decision making could have a negative impact on public relations and the
divisions’ and University’s image and reputation and to the success of the student. The welfare and
safety of students is of critical importance. Creating opportunities for student engagement can have
significant impact on student retention.

Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution

Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
Master’s Degree and two years of full-time post Master’s Degree experience in
residential life administration, student development, management and supervision,
including experience in multicultural awareness, staff selection and training processes,
and academic/retention programs in resident student populations
