Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. (This section is used for advertisement of the position.) The Assistant Director, Residential Education, manages the Residential Life education programs and staffing initiatives. The Assistant Director advises and refers staff and students for academic support. The incumbent maintains full-time office hours and is available as needed to attend evening/weekend programs and training and responds to emergency/crisis situations 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Summer duties include assisting with summer training, new student orientation, program planning for the academic year, and other related duties. The position reports to the Director of Residential Life. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Level of Freedom: Residential positions require that decisions are made 24 hours/day and 7 days/week. Few other departments are available at those hours to assist in decision making. Residential living not only supplements and supports the student’s academic endeavors, but it also supports the individual emotionally and physically. Decisions are often made under some pressure and in a rapidly changing environment. The position must apply broad policies to problems and situations not falling clearly within precedents. More complex issues are resolved with guidance from the Director. Impact: Errors in judgment and decision making could have a negative impact on public relations and the divisions’ and University’s image and reputation and to the success of the student. The welfare and safety of students is of critical importance. Creating opportunities for student engagement can have significant impact on student retention. 4.
