Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is used for advertisement of the position.) The Area Director is the principal administrator responsible for all Cooperative Extension programming in a designated geographic area. The Area Director is responsible for managing all human, capital, and financial resources to accomplish the mission of Cooperative Extension. The Area Director serves as an integral member of Cooperative Extension's administrative team, helping to develop and implement Federal, State, County and University procedures and policies. The incumbent has full authority to delegate specific responsibilities to other Area faculty and staff within University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) guidelines. The position reports to the Dean/Director, Cooperative Extension. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 40% - Program Leadership, Planning and Development Provide leadership and guidance required to develop recognized, high-quality Cooperative Extension curricula, scholarship, and community-based educational programs Mentor faculty to encourage excellence, develop successful programs, and help guide individuals to academic success Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to set realistic goals, establishing organizational direction, developing staffing plans, assessing priorities, and allocating resources to meet the identified needs of the Area, as defined by needs assessments Develop internal procedures for managing physical, human and financial resources that will allow maximum use of faculty and staff expertise and talent Provide quality assurance to ensure excellence in all phases of program implementation, including publications, grants, teaching and research Allocate internal resources based on needs assessment and Area priorities Expand programming reach through resource development which may include grants, partnerships and collaborations 35% - Management Hire qualified faculty and staff to fill position vacancies created by assessed program needs and ensure aggressive recruitment activities, resulting in candidate pools reflecting excellence and diversity Provide quality leadership and guidance to faculty (including educators and specialists) and staff; establish expectations, evaluate performance, assess training needs, and implement faculty and staff development programs Actively communicate with county decision-makers to develop support and funding for Cooperative Extension programs Make fiscally responsible decisions and ensure that an environment of fiscal responsibility is maintained within the Area Provide supervision or oversight for the work of all support and classified staff to ensure that supervisors are properly trained, and that they systematically implement personnel processes, enforce policies and develop skills that enable staff to succeed Oversee the development and maintenance of internal systems for processing information, maintaining records and facilitating the conduct of business Maintain open channels of communication and develop an effective internal network for information flow Maintain high faculty and staff morale, promote collegiality and maintain identification with the University as well as the Area Provide oversight for conflict resolution within specified Area Position Description – Area Director Page 3 Assist in the development and implementation of Affirmative Action and Civil Rights plans and ensure that both employees and program participants reflect diversity Develop and implement a plan for personal self-development that includes administrative, managerial and leadership skill development Work with the Dean and the UNR Foundation to set and achieve development goals and carry out campaigns within the policies and framework of the university 20% • Public Relations Have a working knowledge of the Area's people, agencies, resources, geography and political structures Present a positive and professional image to the public and serve as an effective representative of UNR and Cooperative Extension Establish position as the principal extension administrator in the Area to whom individuals look for resolution of conflicts and problems Plan and implement strategies to promote understanding of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's philosophy, mission, direction and accomplishments to Area residents, other agencies, and officials at all levels 5% - Service Contribute to local, state, university, regional or national service in order to represent Cooperative Extension and expand opportunities for Cooperative Extension faculty and staff 3. Level of Freedom: The Area Director has the freedom to make programmatic and operational decisions for the counties within his/her jurisdiction. This includes use of discretionary funds, development of strategies for working with various constituents, personnel decisions and oversight of all activities. The University campus is extended into Nevada’s communities through the local Cooperative Extension Offices. The Area Director has the autonomy to make decisions within the Area. Consultation with the Dean occurs in the areas of strategic and budget planning, programmatic coordination with statewide initiatives and budget planning. Impact: Decisions and judgments regarding program and operational priorities, quality of work, and impact of programs greatly influence citizens' opinions of this institution. There is a direct relationship between the effectiveness of Cooperative Extension programs and student enrollment, financial support, political support, and respect for the University. In addition, the decisions made may have a direct Impact on the level of County financial support made available to Cooperative Extension. 4.
