Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Academic Advisor, Undergraduate Business Students is responsible for providing academic advising to prospective and current business students in individual and group advising settings. The incumbent takes the lead on certain activities and assists the Coordinator of Advising, Recruitment and Retention with other recruitment and retention activities. The Academic Advisor reports to the Coordinator, Advising, Recruitment and Retention for College of Business (CoB). 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 60% - Academic Advising Advise students on completion of pre-business core, declaration of major and path to graduation Work with College of Business (CoB) faculty advisors and various entities on campus to address and manage students’ concerns and needs to completion of degree program Remain knowledgeable about CoB and university processes and policies to best serve business students and convey accurate information to CoB staff, faculty and students Participate in measures related to enrollment management 20% - Student Recruitment and Retention Lead on-campus recruitment activities for CoB including coordinating participation of student and faculty representatives, developing written materials and organizing a program for college sessions Assist the Coordinator of Advising, Recruitment & Retention (Coordinator) with planning, preparation and participation in off campus student recruitment activities Plan, prepare and participate in assigned retention-related activities Audit, review and submit corrections to Admissions and Records to ensure the accuracy of CoB student data in MyNevada Serve as the advisor for the College of Business Peer Mentor program which uses student volunteers to recruit and retain students including setting direction, identifying student roles, managing the budget and coordinating activities 20% - Project Coordination Manage the graduation verification process for CoB in compliance with the Office of Admission & Records Prepare for graduation audits and consult with faculty and Admissions & Records to resolve issues Review each student’s completion of degree requirements and make corrections and changes within defined parameters to prepare documentation for gradation that is complete and accurate Provide day-to-day leadership and direction to student workers in the office including managing workflow, establishing professional standards and providing training Other projects, as assigned Position Description - Academic Advisor, Undergraduate Business Students Page 3 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The Academic Advisor makes decisions related to students’ eligibility to enter into a major in the CoB, and students’ eligibility to graduate. The Academic Advisor makes decisions related to the day-to-day operations of assigned projects and has authority to request corrections to student’s academic records within defined parameters. The Academic Advisor consults the Coordinator regarding decisions related to short- and long-term planning of projects and activities. Additionally, the Academic Advisor consults the Coordinator regarding decisions related to unusual or difficult student issues and concerns. Impact: The Academic Advisor helps prevent students from registering for inappropriate and/or unnecessary courses thereby potentially minimizing time to degree completion and increasing education costs. Decisions and judgments made can have a significant impact in facilitating the integration of entering students into the university community and student engagement and in student retention. The position has a direct impact on student progress toward graduation and therefore the perception and reputation of CoB and the University. 4.
