Homework #3
Due 10/04/2013
Problem #1
The circuit shown below is a dc model of a residential power distribution circuit. Use the
node – voltage method to find the branch currents i1 – i6 .
Test your solution for the branch currents by showing that the power dissipated equals
the power developed.
Problem #2
Repeat Problem #1 but now use the mesh – current method.
Problem #3
Use the node – voltage method to determine the power associated with the dependent
voltage source in the circuit shown below.
Problem #4
Use the mesh – current method to find the total power dissipated in the circuit shown.
Problem #5
Use the mesh – current method to determine the current iΔ in the circuit shown below.
Problem #6
Use the node – voltage method to solve the Alternator Problem shown below.
An automobile alternator with an internal resistance of 0.2 Ω develops an open circuit
voltage of 16.0 Volts. The storage battery has an internal resistance of 0.1 Ω and an
open circuit voltage of 12.8 Volts. Both sources are connected in parallel to a 1.0 Ω
load. Determine the alternator current, the battery current, and the current in the load.
The circuit diagram is shown below.
Is the battery supplying current to the load, or is the battery being charged? Give your
reasoning.
Problem #7
Repeat Problem #6 but this time use the mesh – current method.
