Guidelines for developing study abroad and field trip* opportunities in CHSS * Field trips would follow steps 1-4 only 1) Apply to the Dean using a Faculty Support Request form to conduct a site visit. http://www.uvu.edu/chss/resource/funding/fsr.html a) Please also provide a 1-page proposal with a rationale and rough budget b) Please consult in advance with you Department Chair about the need for such 2) During a site visit, certain issues should be resolved, including (but not limited to): Student housing Meals (cafeteria, grocery store, restaurant) Public transportation Teachers, classrooms, textbooks Possible tuition issues with foreign partner Excursions Matters of health and safety Emergency and contingency plans Rough budget Contacts “on the ground” in-country Timeline/Calendar (daily schedule of activities, study, etc.) 3) Upon return, an initial study abroad prospectus should be created in consultation with Fred White (CHSS) and relevant Department Chairs. Issues to consider: Can your program attract 12 or more students? How many faculty do you plan to include? For each professor there should at least be 10 students. How many weeks do you plan to be abroad? Will you include course work before and/or after the trip? Is the program financially self-supporting? Do you intend for this program to be annual, bi-annual, a “one-off”, or..? What courses will be offered? What excursions will be offered? Where will students sleep, eat, attend lectures? Does program size merit a student RA or second faculty member? What is the “take away” for the students? 4) Consult with relevant faculty and departments regarding the courses to be offered. Please discuss with relevant Department Chairs how your program might impact already existing programs. Please receive email or some form of written confirmation from relevant parties in advance of an application. 5) Start preparing a study abroad application. http://www.uvu.edu/international/isp/study_abroad/forms.html 6) Consult with Grant Skabelund (International Center) regarding application process and development. 7) Make an application to the International Advisory Board (Chair: Grant Skabelund). 8) Respond to feedback provided by the International Advisory Board. 9) Have application signed by the Dean. 10) Submit to the International Center for final processing.
