Dantes is betrayed by a group of his friends and ends up spending 13 years in prison. With the help of a priest in that same prison Dantes escapes and discovers a treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo. Having untold wealth, he refashions himself as the Count of Monte Cristo and seeks revenge on those who stole his fiancé and 13 years of his life. Skill #6, Time and Meeting Management: As the powerful and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantes plans the downfall and ruin of those “friends” who put him in prison, the most powerful of which is Villefort. To take down Villefort, the Count starts several businesses which loan money to Villefort. The Count encourages Villefort to overextend himself and even to get into some illegal dealings. When the time comes, Dantes calls in the debts, exposes Villefort's crimes and reveals his true identity to Villefort, exacting his revenge. To accomplish the extreme revenge, the Count had to plan for years. There were specific things he had to accomplish. To maneuver himself in such a way to trap Villefort, Dantes had a specific list of things he needed to get done to reach his goal. As he accomplished one item on his list he was able to move on to the next. This use of a “to do list” helped him accomplish his goals. Conclusion: Edmond Dantes was an excellent leader. Edmond started out as a skilled seaman capable of inspiring a crew to the point that he was made their captain. After his captivity he continued to increase his leadership abilities by consolidating his power and establishing a presence in Paris. He became a political, economic and social force in the community there. Although he used the leadership and power that he amassed for dubious purposes, he was a very effective leader and used those he led to accomplish his revenge.
