GSS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award 2016
Recognizing individual graduate students and graduate student organizations that further the
principles and values of diversity, equity, and inclusion at BGSU.
History
In 2014, the Graduate Student Senate (GSS) brought back the GSS Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion Award to support the university’s commitment to institutional diversity. This annual
award recognizes individual graduate students and graduate student organizations that have
demonstrated a significant commitment to enhance diversity on the BGSU campus through
efforts to promote a campus climate that respects and values individual and cultural differences.
The award will be given to both an individual graduate student and a graduate student
organization to provide recognition and encouragement towards future diversity
programming/support.
Awardees will be recognized at the Charles E. Shanklin and Graduate Student Senate Awards
Ceremony on April 12, 2016 and their names will be published on the GSS website.
Eligibility
Any current graduate student is eligible to apply for this award. A graduate student organization
that wishes to apply must be registered with BGSU’s Office of Campus Activities.
Award Criteria
Awards will be based on contributions involving success (leadership, innovation, initiatives,
creativity) in furthering a diverse, impartial, and inclusive academic environment at BGSU.
1. Integrates diversity concepts and values into their daily lives and/or organizational
activities.
2. Demonstrates a strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion.
3. Supports acceptance of individual and group differences.
4. Develops methods of increasing and valuing diversity among campus constituents
(students, faculty, or staff).
Nomination Requirements



Completion of the GSS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award submission form
(http://bit.ly/GSSAwards2016)
A 1-2 page double-spaced nomination letter from the individual graduate student or
the graduate student organization addressing the four criteria stated above and a brief
description of the individual graduate student or the group being nominated. The
letter should contain a description of contributions that the individual graduate
student or the organization made (i.e., activities or initiatives that promoted a diverse,
impartial, and inclusive environment at BGSU).
Documentation of educational outreach effort (i.e., event fliers, distributed
materials/literature, lecture or documentary series, community service, etc.)




At least two recommendation letters and no more than five from any of the following:
students, faculty/staff, community members, or anyone who is familiar with the
individual or group’s efforts.
Additional supporting evidence is recommended but not required. Additionally, this
could include budget worksheets, strategic or implementation plans, contracts,
photos, or newspaper articles. A maximum of five pages of such supporting material
will be accepted.
The efforts for which the individual graduate student or the graduate student
organization being nominated must have taken place after February 27, 2015 and
before March 4, 2016.
Nomination letter must be uploaded on the submission form. Paper or email letters
will not be accepted.

Nominations are reviewed and winners determined by a subcommittee of representatives from
the GSS Senate Executive Committee.
