The UCSF Global Health Core is excited to introduce the HEAL Initiative, an
innovative two-year post-residency fellowship dedicated to equipping
physicians with the knowledge and expertise needed to effectively serve in
resource limited settings, both internationally as well as in the U.S.
With our
many years of experience working in resource limited settings, we have come to
a critical conclusion: to have lasting impact as health professionals in resource
limited settings, the will to serve must be combined with the expertise to do so.
Expanding upon this understanding, we built the HEAL Initiative with three core
commitments. 1) Local health professional capacity must be supported. 2) The
American health professionals who commit themselves to this mission must
deeply understand the local context and have both the clinical and non-clinical
skills to truly improve care. 3) The relationships between individuals and
institutions must be reciprocal, long-term and equitable.
Through the HEAL
Initiative, we are linking together health professionals dedicated to serving their
community and to learning from others like them all around the world. Fellows
rotate between an underserved site in the U.S. and an international site, gaining
clinical skills and contextualized experience while simultaneously fostering crosscultural learning through close collaboration with our local partners. In addition to
an online Master in Public Health (MPH) from UC Berkeley, our graduates will
come away with a set of robust and versatile skills essential to improving the
delivery of health care around the world.
Our goal is to provide the next
generation of global health physicians with the training program we wish we
ourselves had gone through. We are currently looking to spread the word of our
fellowship and to invite your residents and recent graduates who are passionate
about health equity to apply for our program beginning in July 2015. Applications
are now open.
