A Comment
On importance of what we collectively do at various
institutions as a part of faculty governance.
Protect our Rights to:
Academic Freedom
• Explore fully within the field of assignment
• Exposition of the subject to students and others what a
teacher believes to be the truth
• Citizen’s right to speak, write and action as an individual
outside the university
Education Policy
• Determine the education policy through deliberative actions
within the units
Along with these Rights comes Responsibilities to
• Perform competently and effectively in assigned duties in
teaching, research and service.
• Refrain from insisting that students or others adopt any
particular point of view as authoritative in a controversy.
Along with these Rights comes the Prerogative to
Academic Tenure
• An appointment of indeterminate term to exercise without
fear of dismissal or other disciplinary action ensuring
academic freedom to conduct research, teaching and
service missions
Summary
Academic Freedom is a basic faculty Right
Tenure is a vehicle needed to ensure
academic freedom
There can be no Academic Freedom
without Academic Tenure
