Welcome to Ms. Prestage’s Algebra 1 class!
Algebra 1 Course Overview
Algebra opens doors. Algebra 1 is the basis for the rest of your high school and collegiate mathematical
course work. Therefore, it is extremely vital for you to master the Algebra 1 curriculum in order for you to
master courses that follow. The major topics of this year will include: foundations for algebra, functional
relationships, properties and attributes of functions, linear functions, linear equations and inequalities, and
quadratics and other nonlinear functions.
Reagan High School Expectations
We will enjoy ourselves and accomplish more if we have an organized classroom environment in which
everyone feels welcome and respected. We can make this happen as long as we all follow our classroom
expectations:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Be respectful. Respect and care about Ms. Prestage, your classmates, the classroom and yourself.
Be on time. Arrive on time; take out your class materials; start on the Warm up activity right away.
Be prepared. Bring required materials; have your homework complete; be in the mindset to challenge yourself.
Be on task. Listen carefully and follow directions; take ownership of your learning; always try your best.
If you feel Ms. Prestage has been unfair, respectfully approach her after class or during independent
work.
Your Choices + Your Actions = Your Future. Choose Your Future.
I am confident that all of you can meet these expectations. If for any reason they are not met, I will first
discuss the problem with you and we will try to resolve it together. If the problem persists, we will seek the
involvement of adults who support you at Reagan High School (parents/guardians, coaches, principals).
Required Materials: DUE ASAP (Tuesday, September 03, 2014 at the latest)
You must have 2 composition notebooks and pencils/erasers each day to fully participate in class!
The following supplies are suggested:
 colored pencils
 glue sticks
 tissues/hand sanitizer

Grading
Meaningful learning happens incrementally, over time, and is not something that can be demonstrated simply
by cramming for exams. Because your grade is to reflect this learning process, everything that you do in class
will be considered toward your final grade. Your grade will be 60% assessments and 40% class work (warm
ups, class work, exit tickets, homework, etc). Assessments are generally given every other Thursday. You and
your parent/guardian will receive an official Reagan High School progress report every three weeks to keep
you aware of your class grade.
Attendance
Students are expected to have excellent attendance. This class will be difficult for those who don’t show
up every day, because one lesson builds on another.
If a student has been absent from class, he or she must check for any missed handouts. The student must
find out about missed notes from a reliable classmate. Notes are taken each day of class.
Punctuality is important! Getting to class on time allows students to take full advantage of their education,
and it shows respect for the teacher and classmates.
If a student is tardy, he or she must get a tardy pass from the main office and enter the classroom quietly and
respectfully. Then, without distracting classmates, the student will get his or her notebook, have a seat, and
participate in the lesson. If a student is tardy three or more times, consequences will be assigned at the school
level.
