Ehmling Email: gehmling@houstonisd.org Tutorials: 8:00 am – 8:30 am Room# Main Gym Conference: 3rd period 10:40 a.m - 11:30 a.m Course Overview Students in will have a discovery of physical fitness and athletic activities through the exploration of sport specific motor skills, techniques, rules, and strategies. Curricular Mapping: In the interest of enhancing physical fitness and athletic skills, this course will develop student interest in sports, lifetime fitness, and a competitive spirit that is inherent in us all. Basic motor skills and knowledge of sports concepts are important tools in the development and continuation of an attitude of health and lifetime fitness. Required Texts/Materials Students are expected to follow RHS policies as set forth in the Student Handbook. The policies as stated in this handbook also pertain to activity in the locker rooms. In addition to the handbook, students must adhere to the following policies while in the locker room: No food, beverages (other than water), gum, cell phones or electronic devises are allowed in the locker room or at any time during P.E. Students are responsible to lock up their own personal items in the locker room. All students are required to dress in the Reagan P.E. shirt ($10). All students must wear appropriate length black, gray, or maroon shorts or sweats. All students must wear socks and tennis shoes. Miscellaneous: 1. Students will participate in a weekly mile run as well as weekly strength training activities. 2. Students are expected to wash their uniforms each weekend in the interest of personal hygiene and overall wellness of the class. 3. Use of locker rooms is a privilege. Let’s keep our locker rooms and athletic facilities clean. Let’s keep our lockers locked, which will help avoid theft. Please note that visiting school athletic teams use our locker facilities. The way in which we present our locker rooms is how the visiting teams will perceive how we respect our locker room. Course Outline Upon the successful completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate competency in a variety of sport specific motor skills through class participation. 2. Integrate appropriate sport specific techniques and strategies into game play. 3. Show an improvement in overall physical fitness including cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, flexibility and concentration through daily participation and periodic assessments. 4. Demonstrate understanding of rules and strategies of various sports through the completion of written tests. 5. Integrate safe and confident performance in a variety of sports and physical activities through participation. Course Outline and Requirements: Please note that this list is not in chronological order. The schedule may be modified according to student learning progress, school events schedule, weather, and facilities usage. The following sports and skills will be covered during the course of the school year: 1. Aerobic Activity 2. Angling 3. Archery 4. Badminton/Speedminton 5. Basketball 6. Fitness Testing 7. Volleyball 16. CPR/AED 17. Rock Climbing 18. Bowling Grading Each student will earn a total of six points per day Monday - Friday. Students will be given (2) point for participation, (2) point for dressing out in their P.E. uniform, and (2) points for attitude/sportsmanship. * Failure to dress out will result in a loss of the dress points for the day. Students will be given (3) no dress days per semester. After the third no dress day in a semester, students will receive a zero for the day. Participation points may be deducted at the instructor’s discretion based on lack of participation or behavioral problems. *The uniform consists of a P.E. shirt, shorts, or sweat pants, and tennis shoes. These shirts are available for purchase through the Athletics’ Office, which is located in the High School Gym. Students must wear cross-trainer (running) athletic shoes with laces. Students also need to wear socks with their athletic shoes. Sandals, slip on shoes, Uggs, slippers, boots, etc. will not be allowed. Dress out: Students have (5) minutes after the tardy bell rings to dress out. (Students excused from participation must dress out unless a medical doctor’s note states otherwise or Coach makes an exception at their discretion). Students who do not participate in activities are expected to bring a note from a parent. On the third consecutive day of nonparticipation, a doctor’s note must be submitted. 2. Participation: Students are expected to participate at each class session. Students who demonstrate a chronic pattern of non-participation (excused or unexcused) may be asked to attend a parent/student conference with their instructor, which will be preceded by an instructor phone call to parents. Instructor reserves the right to contact the parent or guardian regarding the validity of any given note or excuse. 3. Lockers and Locks: Each student will be able to use a P.E. locker. We prefer them to use combination locks. Students are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their locker. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ITEMS STOLEN FROM THE LOCKER ROOM. THE STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE TO LOCK UP ALL OF THERE ITEMS SO THEY WILL NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. 4. Instructor may conduct random locker checks. Locker checks will include notation of whether or not a student is keeping their locker clean, locking lock correctly, storing items in his/her locker other than P.E. clothing and/or uniform for sport activities. Misuse of lockers will result in student disciplinary action at the discretion of the instructor. Grosse neglect may result in an infraction. 5. This syllabus is subject to change upon discretion of the Physical Education Department.
