Student must be currently enrolled as a second through fifth year full-time student (minimum 12 hours) in an accredited college or university for both fall and spring semesters of the coming year. Scholarships are for one year. The student must be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in math, science, or engineering. 2. Read the application form carefully and try to respond fully to all sections. NOTE: The section about parent’s membership in SAPA is not applicable. Responses on the application must be typed. 3. How have you become interested in the petroleum industry? Note: The essay questions are a very important part of this application, and should be given serious thought by the applicant. The student must be enrolled in an accredited junior college, community college, or four year university. 2. The scholarship program is limited to 2nd through 5th year students. The student must either be enrolled in a second year program or have enough AP credits from high school to begin his first year as a sophomore. 3. The student must be pursuing a degree in math, science, or engineering. 4. The student applying for the SAPA scholarship must submit the following information no later than June 28, 2013: a. The completed SAPA Scholarship Form b. Two (2) letters of recommendation (not from family) c. Transcript for the most recently completed year at an accredited college or university. The transcript must come from the registrar’s office in a sealed envelope and mailed to SAPA at the address below or emailed from the registrar’s office to SAPA. . 5. The information required in item 4 above can also be emailed to Ms. Wulff at mnwulff@terracon.com.. REQUIREMENTS FOR MAINTAINING SCHOLARSHIPS: 1. The student must maintain full time status – a minimum of 12 semester hours on the semester system and 10 hours on the quarterly system. 2. The student should maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. To remain in good standing the student must submit his or her transcript for the for fall semester grades to SAPA on or before January 30, 2014. The transcript must be from the registrar’s office of the institution in a sealed envelope and forwarded to SAPA or emailed directly from the registrar’s office to SAPA as instructed above. 3. Failure to submit transcripts by the above due date will result in scholarship funds being frozen or refunded to SAPA. PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIP TO INSTITUTION 1. Funds that are sent from SAPA to the school via certified mail. The signed receipt is proof that the funds were received by the school. 2. The school must apply 100% of the scholarship funds to the student’s tuition expense. SAPA Scholarship Application Form 2013-2014 Page 5 Frequently Asked Questions: 1. What if the college doesn’t have a record of my scholarship? Funds are sent by registered mail so SAPA has a record of the delivery. If there are any questions about the delivery of your scholarship please contact Melynne Wulff. 2. What happens if my GPA drops below 2.8 for one semester? The GPA is a cumulative average, it is not based on one semester of grades. 3. Do I need to re-submit transcripts next year? Your scholarship is for one year. You must re-apply each subsequent year if the student wants another scholarship. If you submitted a copy of the fall transcript for the current year SAPA will use the same transcript for your new application. You do not need to re-submit previously submitted transcripts. 4. Internal Revenue Service Implications – the following are excerpts from IRS Publication 970 – 2009 – Tax Benefits for Education A scholarship is tax free only if: You are a candidate for a degree at an eligible educational institution, and You use the scholarship to pay for qualified education expenses. Candidate for a degree: You are a candidate for a degree if you 1. Are pursuing a degree at a college or university, or 2. Attend an accredited educational institution that is authorized to provide: a. A program that is acceptable for full credit toward a bachelor’s or higher degree, or b. A program of training to prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation. Eligible educational institution: An eligible educational institution is one that maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and normally has a regularly enrolled body of students in attendance at the place where it carries on its educational activities.
