Bank Branch Design
As a consultant working for ABC Bank you are asked to design their new Eskişehir branch. Since
Eskişehir is a crowded area, you concluded that the customer arrival process is a Poisson process and
after analyzing the past data of other branches you expect the customer arrival rate to be 8
customers/hour. You have to decide on the queueing regime and the number of clerks.
For the queueing regime, you have 3 alternatives:
1. No sharing of information with customers and they will select among the existing queues
randomly (with equal probability) upon their arrival.
2. A simple screen that shows the number of people (NQ(Process 1.Queue) function in Arena) in
existing queues and customers will join the shortest queue (the closer one if queue lengths are
equal).
3. A numerator which gives each customer a number upon their arrival and hence creates a single
queue for the servers.
For the clerks you can hire two rookie clerks with exponential service rate 5 customers/hour (mean
service time is 12 minutes) or one experienced clerk with exponential service rate 10 customers/hour.
Create 4 alternative simulation models and run them for at least 1 year (5 days a week for 52 weeks
and 9 hours a day) and take 10 replications for your results to be accurate. Use appropriate graphs and
tables to show key performance measures of different alternatives and come up with your final
suggestion.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1) This homework can be done as a team which consists of 2 students. Homework of team which
includes more than 2 students will NOT be evaluated.
2) Put all the screenshots you have taken into a single MS Word File and make all your comments
below or above each screenshot.
