ENM 307 SIMULATION - HOMEWORK 2
Deadline: 31.03.2016 Thursday
Two different part types arrive at a facility for processing. Parts of type 1 arrive with interarrival
times following a lognormal distribution with a log mean of 12.5 hours and log standard deviation of
3.0 hours (note that these values are the mean and the standard deviation of this lognormal variable
itself); the first arrival is at time zero. These arriving parts wait in the queue designated for the only
part types 1’s until a (human) operator is available to process them (there is only one such human
operator in the facility) and the processing times follow a triangular distribution with parameters 5,
7, and 8 hours.
Parts of type 2 arrive with interarrival times following an exponential distribution with the mean of
14 hours; the first arrival is at time 0. These parts wait in a second queue (designated for part 2’s
only) until the human operator is available to process them (there is only one such human operator
in the facility); processing time follow a triangular distribution with parameters 4, 7 and 8 hours.
After being processed by human operator, all parts are sent for processing of an automatic machine
not requiring a human operator, which has processing times distributed as triangular with
parameters 3, 6 and 8 hours for part 1 and exponential with mean 4 hours for part 2. All parts share
the same first come, first-served queue for this automatic machine. Complete parts exit the system.
a) Simulate the system by using ARENA Simulation Software for 4000 hours. (Take the screenshots of
general model and each module you used. For example if you used the create module open it and
take the screenshot in order to show how you entered the information to that module.)
b) Study all the reports produced by ARENA (including entity, resources, queue etc.) and determine
the average times and units. (Take the screenshot of each report)
c) According to the reports you obtained, what is your comment about the system? Is everything
right or does the system have any problem? If you see a problem what are your suggestions, how can
this problem be solved?
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1) This homework can be done as a team which consists of 2 students. Homework of team which
includes more than 2 students will NOT be evaluated.
2) Put all the screenshots you have taken into a single MS Word File and make all your comments
below or above each screenshot.
