1
TASK
Essential Question: Did imperialism have a positive or negative
impact on African countries?
The unit on Imperialism has focused on the viewpoints and motives shared by
European Powers in their quest to dominate the continent of Africa. The
historical results of this time period can still be seen today.
Task: Write an argumentative paper on the impact of Imperialism on a
specific African country.
African Countries
Central African Republic
Sudan / South Sudan
Kenya
Algeria
Zimbabwe
Democratic Republic of Congo
South Africa
Sierra Leone
Senegal
Rwanda
Be sure to include specific details and examples in your essay. You
must also show a basic understanding of your country prior to
imperialism so you can make a meaningful argument as to whether
or not imperialism was positive or negative. (What was the country
like prior to European imperialism?)
Note: You may use online sources (that are credible. I would suggest
articles from the media center’s databases) class notes, text
readings, class handouts, and film notes to enhance the writing of
your essay. You should reference a minimum of 3 credible sources
