What’s so shocking
about sugar?
• Sugar adds an average of 16% of the calories in the
Standard American diet (Dietary Guidelines for Americans
2010)
 Based on a 1,800- to 2,600-calorie diet, this

equals 18 to 26 teaspoons of extra sugar a day
These extra calories from sugar may lead to:
• Weight gain
• Type 2 diabetes
• Impaired immune system
• Chronic diseases such as cancer & heart
disease
