Getting Meaning from Context The following exercise helps us to define a word through its context. In his well-known painting The Third of May, the Spanish artist Goya depicted soldiers shooting a group of simple people. What part of speech is depicted? (Noun, Verb, or adjective) What kind of person might depict something? What does depicted mean? When we finish, we may check our definition in a dictionary. 3. Read the text entitled “What can We Learn form Art? Interactions 2, pp. 164166. 3.1. Understanding Outlines: On page 170 there is a possible outline for the reading selection. The general topics are filled in. But the reading also contains many subtopics that serve as supporting material. Use the list of subtopics available on p. 169 to complete the outline. 3.3.
