work environment

Key Points:
1. If you need to be excused for an absence or leave school early, you will go to student services.
2. For bus notes go to student services.
3. If you are sick, do not call your parents from the teacher’s classroom or your cell phone. You need
to get permission from your teacher and check in at student services office and ask to see the
nurse. You will contact your parents from there.
4. To make an appointment with a counselor or administrator, see the secretary in student services
office.
5. When you need to turn in money, other than for lunch (like sports fees or field trips), go to the
book in the main office.
6. To pick up confiscated items, go to student services.
7. Please speak quietly so the office staff can work without disruption.
Reason the Expectations are Important:
So the offices can operate in an efficient business atmosphere.
Teaching Non-Examples & Examples:
Non-Example
A student gets very angry and starts yelling at the
secretary when she tells him that his parent will
need to pick up his confiscated phone.
A student went to a doctor’s appointment but
forgot to check out at the main office. The office
staff had to stop what they were doing and is now
trying to figure out where the student is.
A student is talking loudly to his friends who are
right outside the window where the secretaries are
trying to work.
Example
A student was having trouble with a friend. She
went to the main office with a hall pass from her
teacher and requests to speak with her counselor.
She then returns to class until she is called down.
The problem is solved quickly and quietly.
A student is feeling sick so his teacher gives him a
pass to see the nurse. He checks in at the main
office. The nurse talks with him. He calls his
parent and waits in the nurse’s office until his
parent checks him out of school at the main office.
Discuss with the students which expectations are not being followed in the non-examples and which
expectations are being followed in the examples.
Activity: Walk your class to the office area showing them all of the offices. Include the main
office/bookkeeper, student services office, counseling office, Mr. Boyd's, & Mr. Higginbotham's
offices. Review key points and expectations at each location.
