How will we track this? Survey… staff, student, or both? Targets/Learning Objectives Respect in the hallway Connection- (make a meaningful connection to the students and their previous work) *Put matrix up (overhead) We’ve learned the expectations at the beginning of the year. At the beginning of the year you learned students needs to walk, open doors slowly, keep the halls push free, use appropriate signs, backpacks stored in lockers, keep the halls food and drink free, help others, keep the hallways moving and clean. Today I am going to teach you how to handle what to do when adults give you directions in the hallway and review the matrix. Because when hallway expectations aren’t followed it makes others feel unsafe, uncomfortable and it can result in negative consequences. We want to be proud of how we interact with each other and feel good to be at school. Furthermore, if students follow expectations in the hallway, student will be able to get to class on time and then able to learn. It is crucial that you be on time and ready to learn. Teach- (demonstrate the teaching point) Let me show you what are the expectations are in the hallway. Can do - Walk - Give space to each other - Get to class - Brief hug (less than 5 second) - Holding hands - Talk to peers - Say hi to teachers in the hall - Be on time - When told by an adult to move or follow expectations, follow the directions - Give a high five or fist bump - Ask for permission to use the hall pass - Go directly to your location when you have a hall pass - Backpacks should be kept in locker Can not do - Hang out in a group and block movement - Kissing - Listen to music - Touching private body parts - Run - Jumping up and down, for example hanging on door frames - Pushing, shoving, kicking, hitting, punching, - When told by an adult to move or follow expectations, refuse to do so, or ignore - Talk the entire time during passing, making you late to class - When you have a hall pass visit with friends or visit other classes Hmmmm… I am thinking we should practice. Since classes are going on while we practice this is a great chance to use an inside voice. Let me demonstrate inside voice, did everyone hear me? No, because I was using an inside voice. Active Engagement- (coach and assess students during this time) Now you are going to have a try in the hallway to practice. You are going to practice voice volume, walking, giving space, and by grouping into small groups. You will a card with a word and you need to find your partner who has the matching card. Just like there are time constraints during passing or when leaving class with a hall pass, you will have a time constraint to find your partner. We will have 3 minutes. Turn and explain to your partner the directions. Link- (re-name the teaching point, try to globalize the learning) While we practice remember that what we do today is something you will use at middle school, high school, and in the community! For instance, at a hospital, grocery store, movie theatre-you need to walk, use an inside voice, show appropriate affection, give space, and stay off to the side or keep moving so others can have access to the facilities too. Workshop- (students are working, you are conferring and/or teaching a small group) Ok, let’s go out into the hall and practice voice volume, walking, giving space, and move around. Share- (public closure, share, exit ticket, etc. On ticket student pick’s one can do that they do well or do that they want to do.
