The proposed activity is the installation of a water supply pipeline between the Driefontein dam and the Duvha Power Station. This can be regarded as a listed activity in terms of Schedule 1 of Government Notice R 1182 of 1997 under the following activities: (i) canals and channels, including structures causing disturbances to the flow of water in a river bed, and water transfer schemes between water catchments and impoundments; (m) schemes for the abstraction or utilisation of ground or surface water for bulk supply purposes. 2 LOCATION OF PROPOSED ACTIVITY: Province: Mpumalanga Magisterial District: Middelburg Title Deed Number(s): T25818 / 1995 and T765577 / 1999 Co-ordinates of Property: (Decimal degrees) Farm Name: Duvha 337 JS & Driefontein 338 JS 1:50 000 map name: 2529 CD Middelburg (Mpumalanga) (E) 29.340946000º (S) 25.959541000º CONSULTANTS: I propose to make use of the following consultant(s): Company name: PD Naidoo & Associates in association with Strategic Environmental Focus Contact person: Reuben Heydenrych Postal Address: Telephone Numbers: (012) 349-1307 P O Box 74785 Cell phone Number: 083-450-0628 Lynnwood Ridge Fax Number: (012) 349-1229 0040 E-mail Address: reuben@sefsa.co.za Description of Activity (Nature of activity, sector, type, size, timeframe, receiving environment and society): The activity entails the installation of a water pipeline from the Driefontein dam to the Duvha Power Station. The water is to be used in the power station’s ashing system. The length of the pipeline will be approximately 6km, depending on the final alignment. The pipeline will be approximately 35cm in diameter, depending on the material chosen. The natural vegetation of the area is grassland, but significant portions of the area have been disturbed by invasion by alien woody species. It is highly unlikely that any faunal or floral populations of conservation importance occur in the area. The area is a predominantly rural area with no major concentrations of human population, with the exception of a small staff village of the Middelburg South Mine (Lesedi), which is located adjacent to the dam from which water will be abstracted. The nearest town is Middelburg, about 25km north of the site. The predominant land use of the area surrounding the site is agriculture and coal mining. 3 There are several existing servitudes for electricity transmission lines and a servitude for a conveyor belt that transports coal from the mine to the power station. It is proposed that the majority of the pipeline will fall within these existing servitudes. The application is urgent due to the water shortage that the power station is currently experiencing. The applicant expects to submit the scoping report to DEAT by the middle of November.
