The Houston Food Bank welcomes volunteers
to assist in providing food to food pantries
and soup kitchens across the city. To register
as a volunteer, kids must fill out a volunteer
form and a minor liability waiver.
Volunteers work with Alzheimer’s patients at
Autumn Grove Cottage locations around
Houston. Volunteers brighten patients’ spirits
and stimulate them through games and group
activities. Children can participate in arts and
crafts, reading, or just visiting. Volunteers
must fill out a volunteer form and participate
in a training and orientation session before
starting.
Volunteer opportunities include tutoring
underprivileged youth after school and
serving as mentors. Volunteers meet with
MECA staff to best determine how their skills
and prior experience can best be utilized.

Youth volunteers will help with animals when
they arrive at the shelter, help customers in
the Happy Tails Pet Supply Shop and/or CAP
Thrift Store and help families select their
pets. CAP even has a volunteer coordinator
who can help students that are trying to get
volunteer hours for school. Please note: Kids
aged 12-15 must have a parent with them at
orientation and during volunteer sessions.
CAP asks that all volunteers commit to
helping at least 4 hours a month for six
months.
Different per
location
If you live in or near the Houston city limits,
there's probably a branch library near you.
The minimum age for volunteers is 13. Some
typical duties include sorting and shelving
books, helping mend damaged books and
magazines, light computer entry, and maybe
helping out with activities involving young
kids.
Work from
home
Make blankets for infants and small children.
An all-volunteer organization called Project
Linus is looking for persons willing to create
blankets for kids in distressed situations,
particularly pediatric cancer patients. The
blankets may be sewn, woven, crocheted,
knitted, or quilted, and size doesn't matter.
You can do the work at home and on your
own schedule. Minimum age = none.

Books Between Kids has no paid staff. The
donated books are counted, sorted, boxed
and inventoried for distribution to the
selected schools purely by volunteers.
The mission of Kids’ Meals, Inc. is to end
hunger among children by delivering
nutritious meals to the doors of preschool
children in need, free of cost, every
weekday, year round. Volunteers will
prepare sandwiches, pack lunches, and/or
sort groceries that are at the facility.
Trees For Houston is a non-profit organization
dedicated to planting, protecting and
promoting trees. In our 26 years, we have
planted over 378,000 trees to benefit the
Houston community. We recognize that trees
clean the air, mitigate run off, cool the
surroundings, and beautify our
neighborhoods. You can help. You can plant,
donate, learn, work, and make friends.
Houston needs trees. We need you.
