Orange’s commitment to RCS RCS, VoLTE & beyond Workshop, 11th of October 2012 Thibaud MIENVILLE, thibaud.mienville@orange.com Multimedia Services Standardisation Manager, Standardisation & Ecosystems Development Orange What is RCS/Joyn? Cross operator standardised communication suite based on IMS Rich Call – share the moment LIVE Initial Set of Services File transfer – share files IM – text chat LIVE Sharing Picture / Video (from camera or gallery) during a call Capability Discovery – see communications options of your peers one – to – one one – to – many Send and receive any type of file Future (backward-compatible) evolutions of Joyn: Blackbird and Crane releases Two evolutions of Joyn (technically based on RCS 5.1) are being defined in GSMA: – Joyn Blackbird: Focusing on RCS 5.1 features that have been prioritised taking into account the feedback from initial commercialisations & FUTs, e.g.: • Support for VoLTE (based on GSMA IR.92) • Support for IP Video Call (based on GSMA IR.94) • File transfer enhancements (e.g. store & forward) • Location • WiFi provisioning – Joyn Crane: Focusing on additional features from RCS 5.1 (e.g. store & forward in Group chat…) Refer to comprehensive overview in next slide Future (backward-compatible) evolutions of Joyn: Blackbird and Crane releases The evolutions of Joyn are progressive meaning that features included in the previous release will be part of the next release. Orange considers RCS as: – A natural evolution of its current suite of messaging services – Coupled with HD voice (now launched in #15 Orange markets), RCS provides a compelling suite of enhanced interpersonal communications services. RCS – gaining considerable momentum MWC announcements 2011 Handset makers e.g. Nokia, Samsung committed 2012 Including: HTC, Huawei, LG, Nokia, Research In Motion, Samsung, Sony, ZTE, Motorola 9 of the top 10 handset manufacturers already committed! Europe: Deutsche Telekom, Operators supporting RCS Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Vodafone standards Other markets (e.g. SK Telecom in South Korea) Europe: e.g. Deutsche Telekom, KPN, Orange, SFR, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, TeliaSonera, Vodafone North America: e.g. AT&T, Bell Mobility, Rogers Communications, Telus, Verizon Asia: e.g. KT, LGU+, SK Telecom Other Markets (e.g. India, Africa): e.g. Bharti Airtel, Orascom Telecom RCS reachable market footprint is exceeding one billion customers! Orange’s contribution towards the RCS ecosystem Orange has developed an RCS Android stack: – has made it available to all device vendors for integration into their (worldwide not just Orange) devices – the stack still ensures vendors to add their own User Interface (UI) – open source-based available at: • http://code.google.com/p/android-rcs-ims-stack/ Orange’s contribution towards the RCS ecosystem The Orange’s stack has been already adopted by several device makers (e.g. HTC, Sony, Motorola) and by third party applications. Hence, Orange facilitates RCS device ecosystem development: – By encouraging device vendors and chipset vendors to commit to RCS – By speeding-up vendors time to market of their RCS native devices The Orange’s stack architecture relies on a singe IMS attachment/registration shared between every IMS service, which eases the integration of new IMS services. Orange contributes in leveraging and fastening the GSMA interoperability testing between devices Latest technical updates, in Orange Orange Spain network successfully granted GSMA June 2012: accreditation in – 150 applicable tests from GSMA accreditation test cases Matrix successfully passed – Results & traces provided to GSMA, per GSMA accreditation process Accreditation for other Orange networks (e.g. Orange France…) will follow by end of this year. Further detailed information (regarding Joyn accreditation status for operator networks and device implementations) available at: – http://www.gsma.com/rcs/iot-accreditation/ Orange’s vision on the future of RCS Today: RCS is an IMS-based interoperable interpersonal communications service offering, by operator community Tomorrow: RCS is an important stepping stone towards a future where all communications will be IP based (in many cases will be first such step) RCS will be a platform enabling a myriad of new services and applications, through network and devices APIs which will enable third parties to develop a range of services running over RCS. Towards LTE Voice still makes use of CS domain, and CS fallback is seen as a good transition towards LTE. But VoLTE is the long term target Customers are used to: – Good quality voice – With interoperability, roaming, seamless mobility… With that respect: – Implementation of standards (in particular GSMA IR.92) – And comprehensive testing is KEY. Thank You! RCS, VoLTE & beyond Workshop, 11th of October 2012, v1.1 Thibaud.Mienville@orange.com Multimedia Services Standardisation Manager, Orange
