Nutrient Management Fall will soon be turning into winter, which means now is a great time to get into the Extension office to update your Nutrient Management Plan! I have sent out NMP data collection sheets to 2015 clients who will need updates for the 2016 crop season. So, if you haven’t received them yet, you should shortly. If the Extension office did not write your plans in the past, but you anticipate needing a plan written for this coming year, please stop by the office to talk to me. It is best to make an appointment, as my office starts to get busy with drop-ins this time of year. If you plan on coming into the office to request an update or a new plan, there are a few things you should bring with you: • Planned crops for 2016 • Crops planted in 2015 • Yield records • Planned manure/organic nutrient source applications for 2016 • Manure/organic nutrient source applications records for previous 2 years • Updated soil tests (need to be updated every 3 years) • Updated manure analysis (needs to be updated yearly) • Animal production information • New field/tract information, including FSA map if possible Do not worry if you are missing a few pieces of information. We can get started on your plan, and finish once you are able to get the rest together. Avoid the springtime rush, and get your plan started today. As always, please call or stop by the office with any questions. Brian Kalmbach Nutrient Management Advisor, Talbot County (410) 822-1244 bkalmbac@umd.edu MDA Extends Deadline for NonPoultry Manure Applications to November 30 Due to a late harvest combined with favorable soil conditions, the Maryland Department of Agriculture has extended the deadline for the fall application of organic waste on dairy farms and other livestock operations from November 15 to November 30. After this date, farmers will not be able to spread manure on their fields until March 1. The extension does not apply to poultry farmers. The closing policy for Extension programs is: If the Talbot County schools are closed than programs are not conducted. If Talbot County Government is closed the Extension office will be closed as well. 2 UPCOMING EVENTS Farm Diversification: Profitability with Specialty Fruits and Vegetables Tuesday December 8th 2015 9:00 to 4:00 PM At Wye Research and Education Center Queenstown, MD Farm diversification opens opportunity and increases potential profitability!
