MSN Cafetorium Tuesday, November 9 – 7-9 p.m. Join us for a FREE evening of speakers that are geared toward parents of middle school and high school aged children. Our opening speaker, Katie Tucker Kmiecik, M.A., L.C.P.C, a professional speaker and counselor at PHD (Society for the Preservation of Human Dignity) will talk to all parents about a topic that impacts us all … “Peer Pressure & Your Child: Practical Tools for Good Decision Making.” This session will be presented from 7-8 p. m. Learn the types of peer pressure your children face today and receive tools to equip your children to respond effectively. The importance of setting goals with your children and exploring consequences; both positive and negative will be discussed. You will learn the connections between effective goal setting and resisting peer pressure. Included will be handson activities for you to implement with your children when you are back in the real world with your family. Parents can then choose between our second set of sessions. Based on the age of your children, you may attend a Middle School or High School presentation. Listed below is a brief synopsis of each. These sessions will be presented simultaneously from 8-9 p.m. ¾ Middle School counselors and social workers discuss the various issues students face throughout their pre-adolescent and middle school years. ο How do our children deal with the daily pressures of Middle School? ο What kind of tools can our children use to handle the academic, social, and emotional issues that they encounter every day? ο Find out how to develop a “toolbelt” of coping mechanisms that allow our children to be able to begin to advocate for themselves and take responsibility for their own actions. ο How can school and home develop a partnership to help our children become successful teenagers and young adults? ¾ High School counselors help parents unravel the mysteries of guiding their student through the four years of high school. Information will be given on the developmental counseling program for each grade level, the placement process, how student achievement data (including standardized test data) assists us in supporting students at the high school, and the registration timeline.
