North Clackamas Schools ANNUAL REPORT Annual Report 2014 - 2015 Our commitment to each student The new district equity policy was adopted by the board on April 23. A message from School Board Chair Kyle Walker As each student enters a North Clackamas school, dreams are nurtured, history and cultural heritage are celebrated, love of learning is fostered and educational, physical, emotional and social needs are supported. The principle of equity goes beyond formal equality where all persons are treated the same. Instead, equity fosters an inclusive and barrier-free environment in which everyone will fully benefit. North Clackamas Schools proudly j oins six other school districts in the State of Oregon with a district equity policy. Our staff and board members dedicated hours to guarantee the inclusivity of this equity policy. The policy’s foundational beliefs foster a commitment to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment, to hold each student to high expectations and provide adequate support, to maximize academic achievement of every child and to prepare all students for college and career. To realize our beliefs North Clackamas Schools will: use district-wide and individual school-level data to inform the district decision-making process; provide students with equitable access to programs and staff; identify and counteract biased practices; affirm the identity of each student; support and enhance student success by incorporating the voice, culture and perspectives of students, staff, families and communities; Kyle Walker, School Board Chair provide multiple and varied opportunities; actively recruit, hire and retain staff that reflects student demographics; and ensure that the district strategic plan embraces the principle of equity. Our equity policy is the foundation to make student success stories happen and our staff, community, and students collaborate to produce the results. As our new equity policy states: The North Clackamas School District is a community of learners committed to equity and the success of each student. This commitment means that student success will not be predicted nor predetermined by race, ethnicity, family economics, mobility, language, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, initial proficiencies or religion. The district will apply this principle of equity to all policies, programs, operations, practices and resource allocations. All students will have access and opportunity to a high-quality education. w w w . n c l a c k . k 1 2 . o r . u s North Opening Doors Jose Penuelas-Cortez walked into a North Clackamas elementary school as a young man who had recently moved into the country and spoke no English. He reflects on his early years as a struggle, but says that he was supported because, " North Clackamas is such a strong community and will make anyone feel safe, welcomed and loved. Educators and volunteers, as well as students, help each other to create a beautiful environment for newcomers and transfer students who wish to expand their knowledge. North Clackamas focuses on making sure every school has its essential needs to make learning easy for all students.” Jose graduated from Milwaukie High School, is attending college to become a teacher and is actively involved in the community. Read an excerpt of an interview with Jose under " Graduate Talk" on page 6. He is a remarkable young man. Jose Penuelas-Cortez, Milwaukie High School Graduate * 2013-14 data includes modified diploma graduates How did your time at North Clackamas Schools contribute to your success? Thanks to all the support from teachers and coaches I was able to discover my “true passion.” At first, I was unsure of what I wanted to study after high school. I thought of many choices but none of them really completed my "perfect" future until I decided to be a mentor at Lot Whitcomb. There I was introduced to a lot of great people. Being around so many young, talented students I was able to discover that teaching was going to be a great experience and that I should focus on getting licensed to teach. What inspired you to start mentoring? The question should be “who,” not “what.” I started mentoring my sophomore year in high school. Ms. Baltus was the one that made me see the huge difference I made on those kids. Since then, I started volunteering on my own time because it made me happy being able to make a kid smile. Those are j ust memories that stay with you forever. Just by being there for them and caring for them made them happy. To see complete graduate’s interviews, visit www.nclack.k12.or.us/ nc12gradpix.
