BARIUM ENEMA COMPETENCY

The student must achieve a minimum score of 75% on the technologist observation, image critique and image evaluation
to pass the competency. Achieving less than 75% on any portion: the student must repeat the total competency (perform
3 additional exams, repeat the image critique and 10.5).

Facility Preparation
Room ready for examination (i.e.: room clean, footboard attached , bucky in appropriate position (if applicable), contrast media prepared, lead
gloves, lead drape attached and other equipment necessary to perform the exam is ready.)
Prepares contrast appropriate for examination
Is able to manipulate all equipment (tower, programming f equipment, etc.)
Sets up fluoroscopy technique, tube, monitor, etc.
Patient Preparation
Identifies correct patient
Obtains and documents history
Explains examination to patient
Asks LMP (if applicable)
Provides proper instructions for gowning and removal of objects that would cause artifacts
Performs scout radiograph appropriate for department
Places patient in SIM's position, inserts enema tip and secures appropriately
Places patient in proper position to begin examination

Enema Competency Technologist's Observation
Fluoroscopy Procedural Tasks
Relays patient history to radiologist.
Provides radiation protection for radiologist, self, others, and closes door
Introduces radiologist to patient
Assists radiologist appropriately during examination
Monitors and communicates with patient during the fluoroscopic examination
Takes charge of the examination after the radiologist leaves
Post Procedure
Performs overhead images as directed
Removal and proper disposal of enema tip and barium bag
Provides appropriate patient care while assisting the patient to the restroom
Properly organizes radiographic images and records for radiologist reading
Completes necessary paperwork
Gives patient appropriate post examination instructions.
Completes exam in a reasonable amount of time. (approx. 30-45 minutes)
Cleans and organizes radiographic room for next examination
