The Wolf Tracks Lot Whitcomb Elementary Principal Cathy Lehmann 7400 SE Thompson Road 503-353-5660 Milwaukie, OR 97222 Fax: 503-353-5675 October 2014 Dear Lot Whitcomb Families: This morning we had an amazing Wolf Pack All School Assembly. We celebrated our community learning and reviewed Kelso Choices, our school rules, we learned expanded notation in 19, math from ourVII September 2014 Volume 4th grade students, recited our school Pledge and had a dance party. Spike the Wolf made an appearance and celebrated with us. One of our school goals this year is for all of our students to be at school on time every day and ready to learn. Please be sure to help your child be here for all of their learning day. Our doors open for Breakfast at 8:00 (all students are eligible for a free school breakfast), students enter classrooms at 8:20 and learning begins promptly at 8:30. Any students who arrive past our 8:30 bell are marked as tardy. We are continuing to work on developing our Growth Mindsets at Whitcomb. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all people who achieve top performance have these qualities. Below are some phrases that you can use with your child(ren) to encourage their strong effort and continual growth: • You can do it - - it is tough, but you can; let’s break it down into steps. • I admire your persistence and I appreciate your hard work, it will pay off! • Your hard work is really clear in this part of your work. • What skill would you like to work on next? • Hey, you were working on this for a while and you didn’t quit! • Of course it is tough! School is here to make our brains stronger! Please read this newsletter and mark your calendar for upcoming events. Our PALS group is also sponsoring a Harvest Party and Talent Show on the evening of October 23. A flyer will be sent home soon with specific information. We are also including a copy of our Wolf Pack Pledge and the Kelso Wheel that you can also use at home. Thank you for sending your children to us each day and trusting us with their education and well being. They are a wonderful group of children and make us smile each day.
