Dear Sunnyside Families:
Spring has sprung at Sunnyside, and as we enter May, it is hard to believe that we are in our last months of school
for the 2015-16 school year. I am extremely pleased to see how hard our students and staff are working, and how
much progress is occurring in every classroom. Our school-wide theme of Perseverance and our focus on Growth
Mindset is evident whenever I sit with a student who is working hard on a difficult task. I am proud whenever I hear
a student say that they are going to stick with something that may be hard for them. This is such an important life
lesson, and I love the way students have embraced it this year!!
As we wind down this school year, we also are preparing for the fall!! We will be saying “good-bye” to a few of our
staff members this year, and “hello” to some new ones. Pam Brown (4th grade teacher), Viki Carlin (Instructional
Assistant), and Claudia Johanesen (Instructional Assistant) are all retiring. In addition, Charity Sadar (3rd grade
teacher on leave) will be leaving us. While we wish them well as they enter a new chapter in their lives, we will
miss them all. With that said, I am excited to announce that I’ve hired Melissa McEwan (2nd grade) permanently
to our staff, as well as Emma Goldsmith (4th grade), a recent graduate of Lewis and Clark University and student
teacher in NCSD.
Please be aware of the following information:
~June 16th- Field day & the last day of school. Please join us for field day. Volunteers are needed to help run
events. Please contact Jen Lindeman at Sunnysidevolunteers@gmail.com to volunteer, or Guy Bailey, our PE
Teacher.
~There will be NO Friday Morning Meeting in June because we will have a big assembly on June 16th, the last day
of school, to celebrate our success this year!! All are invited to attend on the 16th at 9:30 am.
~We are still continuing to register Kindergarten students for the 2016-17 school year. If you have a child who is
Kindergarten age, or know other parents in the community who have children that age, we have registration
packets available in the front office.
~Finally, if you’ve moved, or are planning on moving, please let us know so that we can start to make plans for
next school year.
Sunnyside School is truly a special place to be. Last week we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Day at Sunnyside.
The students and families were extremely kind to all of us in showing great appreciation for the work that we do.
Thank you for making this a team effort. I am so proud of our
school and our community, and look forward to what the
future holds for us!!
Sincerely,
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kiltow

stomach. (Wear sleeveless athletic jerseys that hang under
the arm pit with a t-shirt; Tank tops exposing straps/

her sides.
3. Clothing or jewelry which promotes illegal activity for
students (drugs, alcohol or tobacco) or discriminates
against another person is not appropriate for school.
4. Sagging pants worn below the waist are not appropriate.

Notes from the Nurse…..
Important Library Dates!
May 27th-June 2nd - 1 book check-out
June 3rd-9th - ALL BOOKS must be returned to the
Library or paid for.
June 10th - Library will be closed for inventory.
No classes in the Library.
Notas de la Enfermera…..
As this will be my last chance to reach all parents, the
following are important items to remember.
Como esta será mi última oportunidad de contactar a todos los
padres, los siguientes son notas importantes para recordar.
All 5th graders age 10 or older have a new immunization
requirement. This new immunization is called Tdap. If
your student has not had the chance to get an updated shot,
take time this summer to get it done and turn proof of
immunization into the school office in the fall.
Parents must pick up all medications at school. No
medication will be sent home with students. Please pick
up medications by June 17th or they will be discarded. A
new yearly medication form will be needed for the next
school year and should be turned into the office in fall.
This form can be found on the Nurse’s website under
Forms.
All 5th graders planning to participate in middle school
sports next school year are required to have a sports
physical prior to participating. These are good for two
years. The sports physical form can be found on the
Nurse’s website under Forms and through the middle
school’s athletic department.
Lastly, even though the sun has not been out much lately, it
will be. Remember to use sunscreen with at least 15 SPF
or higher. Make sure it is not expired so it will work.
Apply it often and after swimming. Wear a hat, too.
Have a healthy summer break!
funcione. Aplíquelo a menudo y después de nadar. Use un
sombrero, también.
¡Tenga unas vacaciones de verano saludable!

Head Lice Exist
Head lice happen, especially on children. They are not a sign of poor hygiene or how clean your home
is. Anyone can get them – doesn’t matter how long your hair is or how much you shower.
Does your child have head lice? Not everyone gets itchy. Use a nit comb on wet hair and look for bugs
the size of a sesame seed or tiny eggs glued to the hair. Make it a weekly routine to check everyone in
your household.
Here are some helpful guidelines for treating head lice:
ALL TREATMENT STEPS MUST BE DONE ON THE SAME DAY.
HOUSE TREATMENT:
1. Vacuum all carpets, floors, mattresses, furniture and the car. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag
in the outside trash when finished.
2. Wash ALL clothing and bed linens in HOT water.
3. NON-WASHABLE items should be either: dry cleaned, placed in a HOT clothes dryer for 20
minutes (pillows, stuffed toys, etc.), placed in freezer for 48 hours, or sealed in a plastic bag for
14 days.
4. Treat ALL brushes and combs by boiling for 10 minutes OR soaking in lice shampoo for 10
minutes.
HAIR TREATMENT:
1. If using commercial lice hair products, treat all affected household members at the SAME TIME.
Before application, wash hair with a basic perfume and conditioner free shampoo.
2. Comb hair thoroughly with a clean comb or brush.
3. Remove ALL NITS with a nit comb, fingernails, or tweezers to prevent REINFESTATION by any
nits not killed by the medications.
4. Notify all people who have recently been in contact with the exposed household member.
5. Contact your physician, health department, or school nurse for further directions or advice.
SCHOOL NOTIFICATION:
PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OFFICE IF YOU TREAT YOUR CHILD FOR HEAD LICE. This
information is kept CONFIDENTIAL, but is important in tracking classroom cases to prevent further
spread of head lice.
