This%past%week%at%Sunnyside,%we%participated%in%“The%Great%Kindness%Challenge”.%%It%was%wonderful%to%watch%
so%many%of%our%students%going%out%of%their%way%to%be%kind%to%each%other.%%Sometimes,%the%simplest%thing,%such%
as%a%smile,%can%make%all%of%the%difference%in%the%world%to%someone.%%I%hope%they%take%what%they%learned%from%
“The%Great%Kindness%Challenge”,%and%continue%to%use%it%at%home%and%school!!
This%year,%North%Clackamas%offered%full%day%Kindergarten,%and%here%at%Sunnyside,%it%has%been%a%HUGE%
success!!%%Starting%very%soon,%you%will%begin%to%notice%a%lot%of%publicity%around%the%district%that%will%promote%
our%full%day%program.%%If%you%have%an%incoming%Kindergarten%student,%or%know%someone%in%the%area%that%does,%
it’s%not%too%early%to%register!!%%%We%will%have%multiple%open%houses%and%a%Kindergarten%Orientation%this%spring%
to%tell%people%about%our%school%and%program.%%We%look%forward%to%welcoming%all%of%our%new%Kindergarten%
students!!
Over%the%course%of%the%year,%we%have%been%explicitly%teaching%our%students%what%our%expectations%of%being%
Safe,%Responsible,%and%Respectful%look%and%sound%like%in%all%areas%of%the%school.%%In%addition,%we%have%been%
working%on%teaching%students%to%have%a%Growth%Mindset%and%to%Persevere%when%things%get%difPicult.%Take%
some%time%to%discuss%these%concepts%at%home%too!!%%Often%times%the%expectations%between%home%and%school%
are%similar,%but%kids%may%not%make%the%connection.%%They%look%to%the%adults%in%their%lives%to%show%them%where%
the%similarities%and%differences%lie.%%

Early Learning Center Preschool ~ Open Enrollment
The Early Learning Center Preschool, located at the Sabin-Schellenberg Center, will soon be opening
enrollment for the 2016 – 2017 preschool year. Applications will be available Tuesday, February 16 and due
by Thursday, March 17. Please come by the school to fill out an application (14211 SE Johnson Road), visit
our website, or call 503-353-5942 to have one sent to you. The lottery for the preschool will be conducted
at the end of March. Our preschool operates on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with AM and PM
sessions. The cost will remain at $80. Children must be 3 by September 1, 2016 to enroll.
Students are Waiting to Read with You- Volunteer with SMART!
SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is an early literacy nonprofit that envisions an Oregon in which every child can
read and is empowered to succeed. We engage community volunteers to help 1st-3rd grade children become confident
readers by providing one-on-one literacy support, valuable adult mentorship, and books to take home and keep. Our SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) program runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00-1:00 pm, and
1:00-2:00 pm. We could also use a few more volunteers to read one-on-one with students, help them discover the joy of
reading and choose books to take home and keep. Volunteer for one hour per week from NOW through mid-May!

Sunnyside Volunteers! While spring is approaching, this is a good time to check
in with all of you to make sure you have completed all
the necessary paperwork so that you are ready to
volunteer in classrooms, on field trips, or at “Family Fun
Night”. The good news is, the majority of you are all up
to date. Thank you. However, for some of you there are
still a few things that need to be taken care of.
Remember, to go on ANY field trip, you MUST have a
background check on file with us and the District. This is
a District-wide requirement and there can be no
exceptions. Since these checks are done at the district
level, they take at least a week to complete; so the sooner
you get this taken care of, the better. Last minutes checks
cannot be completed in time. Please note that the
background checks are good for three years, while the
volunteer orientation is good for your entire time in our
building. Feel free to contact me to check on your status
so we can make sure that you are ready to volunteer.
Volunteer orientation will be held before each PTA
meeting at 6:15 pm or 3:15 pm. These are short
meetings and will not take much of your time at all.
Again, I can let you know if you have not attended one
yet.
Thanks to all of you volunteers who have worked so very
hard helping our school this year. In big ways and in
small ones, any help given to a teacher, a student or a
staff member is appreciated.
Please watch for emails to come for help that will be
needed during Family Fun Night. If you are not getting
emails from me, please check your spam folder. If we do
not have enough people to help run games, etc., we have
fewer activities and longer lines. If everyone pitches in for
just a short session, we can ALL enjoy the fun! Thanks to
all of our fabulous Sunnyside volunteers!!

candid pictures...the first day of
school, field trips, etc. Pictures may
be submitted electronically by emailing them to
SunnysidePTA@gmail.com, or you can drop them off at

TAG Referral Period
Forms are now available in the school office to request
evaluation for the TAG program. Talk to your child’s
teacher if you would like further information. Completed

Sunnyside Elementary is hos ng our annual Spring Family Fun Night on Friday, March 4, 2016. This event is a fun-­‐filled evening for our families with ac vi es, games, pizza, raffle baskets and a silent auc on. This year our theme is Roadrunner Luau.
All funds All funds raised from the event will help support our many school-­‐wide programs. As a PTA, we are commi ed to be ering our student’s educa onal experience. We do this through Bookworms (a program to encourage reading), Backpack Buddies (provides food security for students), Sunnyside D.O.G.S. (encouraging posi ve male role models in the school), enhancing technology, physical school improvements, and community building events. We also directly help our classrooms with monetary allotments for each teacher and grade level.
We ask for your help to make Spring Family Fun Night a success! The Sunnyside PTA is asking both businesses and individuals to donate a product, service and/or gi cer ficate to be raffled or auc oned at our event.
Don ng to Sunnyside Elementary can benefit your business or organiza on in many ways. The Dona
PTA is a non-­‐profit organiza on so your dona on is tax deduc ble (Tax ID # 93-­‐0599524). This is also a great way to adver se to our larger community.
